Accounting Assistant

Summary: The City of Salinas is seeking candidates for the temporary role of Accountant within the Finance Department. This position entails a standard work schedule from Monday to Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Position Overview: This is a non-benefited, hourly position with a maximum of 1000 hours allowed in a fiscal year, featuring an average weekly schedule.
Special Instructions: Applicants must provide proof of required education at the time of application. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation and reconciliation of the general ledger and subsidiary accounts; distribute monthly departmental reports.
- Support daily financial transactions management, including bank transfers and credit card transactions.
- Compile and report transactions to address budget deficits and misclassified accounts; assist other departments with financial data.
- Contribute to the development of the City's Annual Budget and Capital Improvement budget; update schedules and encourage transparency.
- Monitor and reconcile bank and investment accounts; ensure timely clearing of checks and ACH payments.
- Assist senior staff in maintaining the general ledger and accounts.
- Support the implementation of updates in accounting systems and procedures.
- Track the status of grants and provide general accounting support.
- Perform routine administrative tasks within the Finance and Accounting Department.
- Execute other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- Accounting principles, including GAAP and GASB.
- Grant accounting and reporting.
- Financial administration principles, including budgeting.
- Governmental accounting practices.
- Modern office procedures.
- Analyzing financial documents and reports.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Building and maintaining professional relationships.
- Preparing financial statements and analyses.
- Utilizing accounting and office software.
Experience: One to three years of experience in accounting, budgeting, auditing, or finance is preferred. Relevant work experience may substitute for education and experience requirements.
Veteran's Preference: Veterans must submit proof of military status to exercise this preference.
Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: All employees are required to perform assigned duties in the event of an emergency.
