Correctional Officer

This position is responsible for maintaining the security and order of the Shelby County Division of Corrections. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of law enforcement procedures and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in maintaining security and order in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Assist in the admittance and release of prisoners.
- Observe and report the conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbance, escape, and introduction of contraband.
- Maintain control of security floors, including sanitation, security, and maintenance.
- Supervise the movement of inmates and maintain control in areas of the prison.
- Perform periodic unscheduled patrols of inmate quarters and conduct counts at specified and unspecified intervals.
- Inspect inmates' persons and quarters for contraband.
- Control, restrain, and maintain disciplinary control over inmates.
- Handle emergency situations according to policy and procedures.
- Acquire and maintain working knowledge of radio, computer, and other electronic equipment.
- Prepare and complete reports connected with responsibilities, such as progress reports, disciplinary, and accident reports.
- Attend and successfully complete Annual In-Service Training.
- Resist inmate attempts to manipulate, distract, or interfere with operations.
- Resolve minor problems/conflicts before they escalate into major problems.
- Follow appropriate procedures under extraordinary circumstances; remain calm to maintain security of the facility and safety of all personnel.
- Perform security checks, routine shakedowns, and searches to ensure security.
- Perform other related duties as required or directed.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years old at the time of application.
- Must have been discharged under honorable conditions from the armed forces, if applicable.
- Must not have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to, or entered a plea of no contest to any felony charge, or any violation of federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances.
- Must attend and successfully complete a recruit corrections training academy.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be able to function in a prison environment.
- Must be able to work weekends and various shifts as required.
- Must have a valid Tennessee driver's license as of the date of the scheduled medical examination.
- Must be of high moral character.
- Must pass a physical examination.
- Must successfully pass psychological and pre-employment tests, TB, and drug screening.
- Must be willing and able to qualify and use chemical spray and perform CPR.
- Must attend and successfully complete basic training school to include physical and written tests.
- This position is subject to a background check for any convictions that have a substantial relationship to potential job duties.
- Only convictions that are substantially related to potential job duties will be considered and will not automatically disqualify the candidate.
