Supervising Psychiatrist

The Supervising Psychiatrist is a key leadership position within the Mental Health Services department at NYC Health + Hospitals. This role is responsible for providing clinical oversight, management, and supervision of psychiatric staff in one or more of the jail facilities in New York City. The successful candidate will be a psychiatric leader who can work collaboratively with other disciplines to ensure high-quality, innovative, and patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical oversight and management of psychiatric staff, including direct supervision, training, and mentorship.
- Collaborate with other disciplines, including DOC staff, to ensure seamless care coordination and communication.
- Design, implement, and monitor clinical procedures, policies, and operating manuals to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Ensure timely medication renewals and educate staff on best practices in psychiatric care, including medication management and treatment of mental health issues.
- Conduct regular case conferences and report to the CHS Morbidity and Mortality review committee as needed.
- Participate in policy revision and creation, and practice guideline development, related to psychiatric care.
- Lead interdisciplinary mental health staff meetings and provide personnel management of clinical staff, including setting quality standards and establishing effective recruitment and retention strategies.
- Provide direct clinical care, including supervision of psychiatric trainees, and participate in on-call responsibilities for off-hours issues.
- Graduation from a medical school approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association.
- Completion of an acceptable internship in an approved hospital.
- Licensure to practice medicine in the State of New York.
- Certification by the American Board in the field of psychiatry or a faculty appointment of Associate Professor or higher in a medical school recognized by the American Medical Association.
- Eight (8) years of satisfactory full-time paid experience in the field of psychiatry, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
- Excellent diagnostic and treatment skills, particularly in psychopharmacology, safe medication administration, and medical complications of mental illness.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to identify staff needs and provide mentorship and education to suit those needs.
- Buprenorphine waiver training is highly encouraged but not required.
