GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Under the supervision of the Respiratory Care Manager, the individual will execute, instruct, and oversee various forms of respiratory therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary assessments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Exhibits the expertise and capabilities required to evaluate and manage patients across all age ranges, from newborns to seniors; tailors assessment and treatment strategies according to the patient’s developmental phase. Engages family members in the care plan and provides educational support to patients and their families, as necessary, considering their developmental requirements.
- Administers diverse types of respiratory therapy, including medical gases, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and breathing treatments. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the equipment, indications, contraindications, risks, and potential side effects associated with each therapy modality.
- Delivers advanced respiratory care using specialized techniques and equipment; secures and maintains an airway during resuscitation efforts; performs external cardiac compressions when required.
- Conducts arterial blood gas sampling, analysis, and related calculations; ensures quality control for blood gas laboratory procedures.
- Performs pulmonary function evaluations, including spirometry, lung volume assessments, and DLCO tests; carries out associated calculations and quality control measures.
- Clarifies the objectives and processes of treatments, tests, and equipment to patients, families, and healthcare personnel; formulates and communicates home care instructions to patients.
- Engages in ongoing professional development at all levels within the department.
- Conducts patient assessments and evaluates care effectiveness; collaborates with nursing and medical staff to enhance patient outcomes.
- Initiates and maintains accurate documentation in patient records and respiratory care logs.
- Provides mentorship to Respiratory Therapy Technicians as needed.
- Maintains, repairs, and oversees respiratory therapy equipment; ensures the department's cleanliness and organization.
- Assumes certain responsibilities of the Director in their absence, such as assigning staff duties, approving overtime, managing staff attendance, authorizing equipment rentals, and activating emergency protocols.
- Complies with all hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT:
- Oversees the administration of respiratory therapy by nursing staff; serves as a consultant for airway management; instructs on proper nebulizer treatment procedures and documentation.
- Supports nursing colleagues by assisting with critically ill patients, including trauma cases and acute respiratory issues (i.e., monitoring vital signs).
- Facilitates patient flow by collaborating with nursing staff; fosters professional relationships that encourage teamwork and goal-oriented interactions.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure and emergency situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients, families, medical professionals, and hospital staff.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills for instructing patients and documenting care procedures.
- Competency in emergency respiratory care procedures is essential for those assigned to the Emergency Department.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND LICENSURE:
- Graduate from an accredited respiratory therapy program eligible for National Board for Respiratory Care examinations; must be Registered or Certified by the N.B.R.C.
- Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Illinois is mandatory.
- Valid CPR certification is required.
- Advanced understanding of acid-base balance, blood gas analysis, and cardiopulmonary physiology is essential.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Moderate physical exertion is required. Continuous standing, walking, or bending may be necessary. Frequent lifting or moving of average-weight materials and occasional handling of heavier items may be required.
- The nature of the work necessitates normal mental and visual attention along with manual dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work conditions are generally acceptable, though may involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements or hazards, such as high-pressure gases.
