The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive grasp of the multi-domain physics that govern power system components and will be adept at maintaining virtual models of physical systems for applications including health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced control strategies.

The successful applicant will be skilled in identifying critical features and dynamic behaviors of physical systems across electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains, and will be capable of developing accurate computer models that reflect these characteristics and behaviors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Expertise in controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) setups, where a physical power system's controller executes control code in tandem with a real-time power system model.
  • Experience in power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing, where actual power hardware is evaluated at full-scale power and voltage levels through integration with simulation tools.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and skill enhancement to stay at the forefront of technological advancements.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients whose requirements may be complex and evolving.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in at least one computer modeling and simulation platform (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java.
  • Understanding of HIL challenges, including communication protocol coordination, amplifier bandwidth selection, and latency minimization.
  • Experience with real-time simulation environments such as RTDS, Opal-RT, or Speedgoat.
  • Hands-on experience with power equipment testing, including converters, generators, motors, and batteries.
  • Subject matter expertise in areas such as electrical power and energy systems, cooling and ventilation systems, and machinery control systems.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical or mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods.
