Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Evidence Custodian to join our team at Dallas Area Rapid Transit. As an Evidence Custodian, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and secure handling, storage, and disposal of evidence and property.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receives, reviews, and stores submitted property and evidence, ensuring the integrity of the chain-of-custody.
  • Ensures all evidentiary items are handled, packaged, identified, contained, stored, transported, tested, and disposed of according to laws and department policies.
  • Provides technical guidance and training to department personnel on evidence handling and preparation.
  • Evaluates the worth of adjudicated evidence and unclaimed property for legal disposal and dispersal.
  • Releases evidentiary items to authorized law enforcement personnel and property owners per laws and department policies.
  • Conducts security controls of property storage locations and updates guidelines and procedures as needed.
  • Participates in periodic inventories of property/evidence storage locations.
  • Responds to subpoenas to bring evidence to court and testify as needed.
  • Organizes, verifies, and prepares evidence for transportation to crime labs and picks up and returns evidence after analysis.
  • Corresponds with various sources regarding evidence and property, including preparing and sending notifications to property owners.
  • Compiles and maintains electronic and paper files documenting property/evidence transfers, releases, and dispositions.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or related field.
  • Four years of experience as a certified police officer or technical experience in law enforcement support work handling evidence and property.
  • Knowledge of Texas Rules of Criminal Procedure and Texas Criminal Court System.
  • Successful completion of the selection process, including polygraph exam, psychological evaluation, and background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced certification requirements as set forth by the Texas Association of Professional Evidence Inventory Technicians (TAPEIT).
  • Valid Texas Class A, B, or C driver license, no DWI conviction within the last sixty consecutive months, and not more than three convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six consecutive months on driving record.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to dust, noise, or temperature and to handle materials and information of a confidential nature.
Working Conditions

Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions, including dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming the incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions, and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
