Position Overview

The Lead Polymer Scientist plays a crucial role in providing expert technical guidance to Westlake Chemical Corporation's Polyethylene (PE) operations. This role involves leveraging extensive knowledge and offering strategic recommendations concerning catalysts, resin production, and process enhancement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the Polyethylene Technology Applications and Analytical Labs, as well as with fellow Chemists and Engineers.
  • Utilize expertise in polyolefin catalysis and lab-scale polymerization techniques, including the use of dry boxes and autoclaves.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of Westlake's PE catalysts and processes, including resin design and manufacturing operations.
  • Act as a mentor and guide for junior colleagues, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge sharing and professional growth.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, contributing innovative ideas to enhance current initiatives and drive new developments.

Technical Expertise

  • Possess a high-level understanding of PE processes and competitive technologies.
  • Stay informed on the latest advancements in patents, literature, and industry publications.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the patent process, including invention records and applications.

Product Knowledge

  • Understand PE products at a fundamental level, focusing on structure and properties.
  • Identify customer needs and assist in the development of new products to address those needs.

Manufacturing Support

  • Provide assistance to PE manufacturing operations as needed.
  • Develop new analytical methodologies to enhance product evaluation.

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety protocols within laboratory settings.
  • Proactively identify and recommend safety improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degrees (M.S. or PhD) are preferred.
  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in chemistry or technology related to polyolefin resins.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate laboratory and manufacturing data.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across various disciplines.

Work Environment

This position requires a presence in both office and manufacturing settings, with potential exposure to various hazards. Employees must comply with safety regulations and may be required to use personal protective equipment.
