The Commonwealth of Virginia invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral teaching fellowship in the Department of Focused Inquiry.

We seek candidates from diverse academic backgrounds who possess a passion for teaching general education courses, with a focus on enhancing written and oral communication skills as well as critical and creative problem-solving abilities. The fellowship will commence in the upcoming academic term.

The Department of Focused Inquiry is tasked with delivering foundational general education courses that cultivate and refine students' academic competencies, including communication, problem-solving, ethical reasoning, global and cultural awareness, and information literacy. The department prioritizes student engagement and belonging as essential components of its mission. Faculty members hail from a variety of academic disciplines, including Education, Music, English, History, Philosophy, and Sociology. Through mentorship, faculty development, and shared resources, educators create innovative teaching practices that support the academic achievements of a diverse student body.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Postdoctoral fellows will engage in a teaching load of small, seminar-style general education classes while refining their student-centered teaching methodologies and gaining experience in delivering an interdisciplinary, equity-focused curriculum. Fellows will collaborate with mentors to enhance their pedagogical skills and participate in a postdoctoral seminar that introduces innovative strategies for student engagement and addressing equity gaps. This fellowship is designed to equip fellows for successful careers in various academic roles, while also providing experience in teaching an interdisciplinary curriculum. Fellows can anticipate being part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary community of teacher-scholars dedicated to fostering student success through collaborative teaching practices.

Through this postdoctoral experience, fellows will gain insights into an innovative general education curriculum; they will design their own courses within the program's established framework; and they will cultivate best practices to support the success of a diverse student population.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ideal candidates will exhibit a strong commitment to student success and a desire to deepen their understanding of teaching and learning. To qualify for this position, applicants must possess:
A terminal degree obtained within the last five years, complemented by experience in teaching or mentoring college-level students. Completion of terminal degree requirements by the start of the appointment. A willingness to engage with a diverse student population with varying levels of academic preparedness. A dedication to enhancing excellence in college-level teaching. Proficient written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to doing so as a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in college teaching within a general education framework. Familiarity with and experience in culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy. Background in teaching and mentoring historically underrepresented students.
