Job Title: Associate General Counsel

About the Role:

Amtrak is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel to join our team. As a key member of our legal department, you will provide critical support to our leadership and business units, ensuring that our operations are compliant with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise senior management on legal matters related to claims, tort law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in supervising outside counsel and managing litigation matters.
  • Develop and implement strategies for effective claims handling and litigation management.
  • Provide guidance on safety and compliance issues, including regulatory agency investigations and inquiries.
  • Represent Amtrak in matters before federal and state courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration tribunals.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school with a license to practice law in any state and the ability to waive into the D.C. Bar.
  • At least 11-14 years of relevant experience in regulatory law, tort, personal injury, and general law in the railroad or transportation industry.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to compose, edit, and prepare correspondence, research, and legal writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior in-house experience working with operations, safety, and claims professionals.
  • Experience with complex claims litigation, including FELA and passenger claims.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations applicable to the railroad industry.

Work Environment:
