Position Overview:

The Cardiovascular Perfusion Specialist plays a crucial role in managing advanced mechanical life support systems, which encompass Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) apparatus.

This specialist assumes the responsibilities of a patient's heart and lung functions during surgical procedures or respiratory emergencies, ensuring the proper operation of the heart-lung machine throughout cardiopulmonary bypass.

Key responsibilities include the setup and management of CPB and ECMO, monitoring and operating right and/or left ventricular assist devices, inserting intra-aortic balloon catheters, and managing intra-aortic balloon pumps. The role also involves performing intraoperative autologous blood recovery for transfusion and conducting invasive pressure monitoring.

The Cardiovascular Perfusion Specialist evaluates and interprets patient data to identify individual needs and deliver tailored care. This position emphasizes fostering a positive environment to enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to maintain professionalism and ensure excellence in customer service and patient safety. The specialist is expected to demonstrate knowledge of service recovery techniques and resolve issues promptly and sensitively.

Collaboration in a culturally diverse workforce and patient population is vital. Participation in an on-call rotation is required, along with the flexibility to perform additional duties as necessary.


Educational Background and Experience:
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Cardiovascular Perfusion Science is required. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in cardiovascular perfusion and possess a comprehensive understanding of perfusion methodologies and principles.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
The ideal candidate will exhibit expertise in cardiovascular conditions and mechanical circulatory support, adhering to the perfusion scope of practice. A solid understanding of healthcare regulations and compliance processes is essential. Professional conduct is expected at all times, with the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical scenarios while continuously enhancing skills and knowledge base.

Proficiency in English is necessary, with Spanish language skills preferred. Candidates should be adept at using computers and relevant software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and electronic medical records. Effective communication, assertiveness in policy enforcement, and the ability to remain composed under pressure are crucial. Leadership, teaching, and collaborative skills are also important, alongside the capacity to work independently with minimal supervision. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities are essential for managing multiple tasks efficiently.


Licensure and Certification:
Board Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) is preferred. Alternatively, candidates may be ABCP certification-eligible and must obtain certification within one year of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is mandatory.
