Description
Under general supervision, the Local Tax Compliance Auditor is responsible for overseeing the collection, enforcement, and auditing of local income taxes. This role involves investigating and resolving tax-related issues for both residents and employers.

Key Responsibilities

Enforces local income tax regulations and ordinances; reviews, examines, audits, and evaluates tax returns submitted by residents and businesses to ensure accuracy and compliance; prepares reports on audit findings; notifies taxpayers regarding any discrepancies in payments, issuing refunds or requesting additional payments as necessary.

Handles inquiries and complaints related to the local income tax ordinances; follows up on account discrepancies; communicates with taxpayers via mail or telephone to resolve issues; prepares and sends notifications of delinquencies and assists in establishing payment plans.


Maintains both electronic and physical records of tax documents for retention purposes.

Acts as a liaison between the municipality and accounting firms or tax preparers.

Assists with accounts receivable processes and the collection of overdue accounts.

Participates in meetings and serves on committees as required; attends various seminars and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills.

Adheres to all job safety requirements and applicable safety standards relevant to the role.

Demonstrates consistent and reliable attendance; due to the nature of the position, the Local Tax Compliance Auditor may be required to work outside of standard hours or on weekends when necessary.


Qualifications

Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); three (3) years of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax preparation; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
*Municipal and departmental goals and objectives; *Municipal and departmental policies and procedures; basic accounting principles; auditing practices; local tax codes; public relations; general office practices and procedures; English spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Skill in:
Utilizing modern office equipment; data entry; operating adding machines or calculators; computer proficiency; Microsoft Office and income tax software applications.

Ability to:
Follow instructions in written, oral, or visual formats; address problems involving multiple variables within a familiar context; exercise independent judgment and discretion; complete routine forms; prepare accurate documentation; compile reports; gather, collect, and classify information; perform basic arithmetic operations; communicate effectively; respond to inquiries from the public and officials; develop and maintain effective working relationships; travel to and access various worksites.
