Heavy Equipment Operations Lead

GFL Environmental is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Operations Lead to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment in a landfill environment.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment, including front-end wheel loaders, water tankers, dozers, scrapers, and landfill trash compactors, to support earth moving, trash processing, and composting operations.
- Process incoming material with heavy equipment to build waste cells in accordance with designed landfill permitted plans.
- Maintain the general working area in a leveled and organized manner, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
- Work closely with traffic control spotters to identify fill areas for dumping solid waste, ensuring efficient and safe operations.
- Operate trash compactors to process trash in 2-foot lifts, working on 3:1 or 4:1 slopes, and maintain accurate records of operations.
- Operate dozers to cover and maintain level tipping areas for daily operations, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
- May operate water tankers and similar equipment for dust control, dirt compaction, and watering grass, as required.
- Build and maintain access and hauling roads, ensuring safe and efficient transportation of materials.
- Use handheld mobile radio units or company cell phones to coordinate tasks and resources, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Perform pre and post-operations inspections, perform daily maintenance required of the equipment, and maintain accurate logs and records, in accordance with Company policy.
- Identify potentially hazardous or unacceptable materials and report immediately to supervisor for proper handling and disposal.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures, promoting a culture of safety and excellence within the team.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by management, ensuring the successful operation of the landfill and the team's overall performance.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired, but not required.
- Must have five (5) years of lead experience and landfill experience, with a proven track record of safe and efficient operations.
- Must be able to meet criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform duties under limited supervision, with a strong focus on safety and efficiency.
- Ability to operate any equipment necessary to perform the job, with a strong understanding of heavy equipment operations and maintenance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, promoting a culture of collaboration and excellence.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, with a strong focus on safety and compliance.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend reports to accurately complete daily assignments, with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in accordance with Company safety policies and procedures, OSHA requirements, and all local, state, and federal laws, promoting a culture of safety and excellence.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift in an outdoor environment 90% of the time, with a strong focus on safety and physical stamina.
- Must be able to use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance, with a strong focus on physical ability and dexterity.
- Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, with a strong focus on visual acuity and attention to detail.
- Ability to manually lift/move up to 25 pounds regularly, with a strong focus on physical ability and stamina.
- Ability to manually push/move up to 50 pounds with assistance from another employee, with a strong focus on physical ability and teamwork.
- Outdoors in varying adverse weather conditions, including low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity, or sudden temperature changes, with a strong focus on safety and adaptability.
- Exposure to outdoor elements, unpleasant odors, small spaces such as equipment cabs, exposure to fumes, dust, or uneven ground, with a strong focus on safety and physical ability.
