Job Title: Process Design Engineer

Join the Oak Ridge National Laboratory team as a Process Design Engineer and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for enrichment systems and stable isotope production.

About the Role:

The Process Design Engineer will work closely with the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) to design and develop complex testbeds for evaluating and researching enrichment devices and production systems. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and creative design solutions to advance centrifuge machine design and support enrichment system development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop process designs for new testbeds and modifications to existing testbeds based on requirements from various stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain process design documentation, including Design Basis / Systems Requirements Documents, PFDs and P&IDs, Heat and Material Balances, Line sizing and hydraulic calculations, Equipment and instrument sizing/selection, and Control System Narratives.
  • Collaborate with the Testbed Design Engineering Group Leader and other ESED subject matter experts, project managers, and WBS managers to execute discrete project scope according to approved schedules, budgets, and technical milestones.
Requirements:
  • PhD with 1-3 years of experience, or a MS degree with 4-8 years of experience, or a BS degree with 5-10 years of experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related field of study.
  • MS Visio and Autodesk AutoCAD experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active DOE Q Clearance.
  • Licensed NCEES Professional Engineer.
  • Knowledge of the theory and application of gas and liquid phase chemical engineering principles with experience in reactive gas operations.
  • Experience with pressure and vacuum systems.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling programs such as AFT Arrow & AFT Fathom.
  • Test Engineer experience in a testing & development environment.
