Purpose Statement:


The role of a Behavioral Support Assistant is to enhance the educational experience by implementing and demonstrating evidence-based interventions across various learning environments, in alignment with established individualized education plans. This position is dedicated to aiding instructional staff and students in reaching their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral objectives; facilitating behavior modification and intervention techniques; and documenting activities in compliance with established protocols and regulations.

This position reports to a designated administrator.

Key Responsibilities:


1. Accompany and supervise students during diverse activities (e.g., assemblies, lunch, recess, transitions between classrooms, community outings) to ensure student safety, promote independence, and assist in developing social and community skills.

2. Support instructional staff in preparing and delivering a variety of educational materials aimed at enhancing the learning abilities, self-care, and social development of assigned students.

3. Assist students with personal care and hygiene tasks (e.g., diapering, toileting, eating, grooming) to provide services in accordance with individualized educational, health, and behavioral plans.

4. Attend meetings, workshops, and training sessions to convey and gather necessary information for effective job performance.

5. Collaborate with instructional staff and supervisors to help achieve student and program objectives.

6. Communicate with instructional staff regarding the progress of assigned students to participate in needs assessments and assist in evaluating progress.

7. Demonstrate effective communication and behavioral techniques to assist students in developing appropriate personal care, hygiene, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving strategies.

8. Implement behavioral plans developed by instructional staff for students with behavioral challenges to meet student needs and maintain a consistent environment.

9. Maintain various manual and electronic records (e.g., student observation logs, behavior charts, assignments) to provide documentation and meet mandated requirements.

10. Monitor assigned students and collect data on academic and behavioral information to assess student progress in accordance with individualized plans.

11. Obtain classwork and homework assignments for students to fulfill classroom requirements.

12. Perform general clerical tasks (e.g., filing, copying, laminating) to support instructional activities efficiently.

13. Provide instructional support to students under the guidance of instructional staff, either individually or in small groups, focusing on academic support, sensory integration, communication skills, and self-help strategies.

14. Respond to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns, de-escalate situations, and maintain a safe learning environment.


Additional Responsibilities:

May require driving to conduct work-related tasks.

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the effective functioning of the work unit.

Work Environment:

The role involves significant physical demands, including lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 40 lbs. The job typically requires 40% sitting, 35% walking, and 25% standing, performed under conditions that may expose the individual to risks of injury or illness.


Experience:
Relevant job-related experience is required.

Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary.

Equivalency:
Two years of paid or volunteer experience working with children in organized settings is preferred. Experience with students with autism or in applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is highly desirable.
