Traffic Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Traffic Engineer to join our team at Dakota County. As a senior technical advisor, you will be responsible for leading internal/external teams, providing guidance on complex programming and operational issues, and contributing to the Transportation Department's senior management team.

• Supervise the operations and activities of a highway functional area, including program, design, construction, traffic, maintenance, and transit.
• Develop and administer a strategic work program that best serves highway customers and meets the goals of the Transportation Department, Physical Development Division, and Dakota County.
• Provide technical consulting services to functional work areas, conduct research and analysis, and recommend appropriate actions to the County Engineer.
• Maintain effective working relationships with department heads, county administrators, and representatives of cities, townships, and local units of government.

• Comprehensive knowledge of transportation and engineering principles and practices, including safety measures, access management, highway geometrics, and traffic impact assessments.
• Demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge and lead multi-disciplinary teams to achieve desired results.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with policy and technical staff.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions with sound judgment, including determination of the appropriate points at which to involve the County Engineer in decision-making.

This is a hybrid position that offers a mix of telework and in-person work at our Western Service Center in Apple Valley, MN. Work is performed Monday through Friday during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Occasional travel and field work may be required.
