Position Overview

The Wound Care Registered Nurse is responsible for providing specialized care focused on wound, ostomy, and continence management. This role involves caring for patients with various conditions, including abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, and incontinence. The nurse will also engage in management tasks such as budgeting and supply management, while educating and consulting with patients and healthcare professionals.

This position caters to a diverse patient population, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, each presenting unique medical challenges. Our clients come from varied family structures and sociocultural backgrounds, encompassing in-patients, out-patients, and home care patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a resource for nursing and other professional staff, providing education to patients and families on the management of wound, ostomy, and continence issues.
  • Deliver pre-operative education and assist with stoma-site marking for patients scheduled for ostomy procedures.
  • Educate healthcare professionals on topics related to ostomy care, wound management, and skin care associated with incontinence.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to select appropriate supplies for wound care services.
  • Maintain clinical expertise by attending professional conferences, meeting with supply representatives, and reviewing relevant literature.
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess and prioritize patient needs effectively.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans, adjusting as necessary in consultation with the primary nurse.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families, documenting pertinent information and coordinating with other healthcare team members.
  • Respond to emergencies with appropriate nursing actions.
  • Execute physician orders accurately.
  • Ensure continuity of care by adapting to the changing needs of patients.
  • Document patient information in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Employ time management techniques to enhance efficiency.
  • Identify changes in patient status through thorough assessments.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practices into care, presenting relevant research during performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • A minimum of one to three years of nursing experience is essential for providing care and training others in wound and ostomy management.

Licensure and Certifications:

  • Must hold a current Registered Nurse license in Nebraska.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required upon hire.
  • After two years in wound care, certification in a specialty area (e.g., COCN, CWCN, CWOCN, CWON) is required.
