The role of nursing encompasses specialized expertise, discernment, and competencies to deliver care to diverse populations. The Registered Nurse (RN) employs knowledge derived from biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, strategize, execute, and appraise patient care. All services are rendered in alignment with the principles of care that foster a continuous partnership between patients, families, and the healthcare team. The care provided is culturally sensitive and tailored to various age groups. The RN adheres to the ethical standards set forth by the American Nursing Association (ANA) and complies with the regulations outlined in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

The surgical department comprises 47 operating rooms catering to a variety of procedures including cardiovascular, ophthalmology, urology, general surgery, gynecology, kidney transplants, neurosurgery, orthopedics, robotic, and reconstructive surgeries. The operating rooms are equipped with cutting-edge technology and advanced equipment. RNs in this environment must be proactive and capable of thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.

Key Responsibilities

Nursing Process

Assessment - Exhibits the nursing competencies necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient's physical, psychological, spiritual, and educational requirements utilizing The Christ Hospital Professional Practice Model.

1. Recognizes and interprets signs, symptoms, and data pertinent to the patient's presenting needs and potential nursing diagnoses.

2. Identifies and promptly communicates to the physician and charge RN any significant abnormal findings and changes in the patient's status.

3. Utilizes effective handoff techniques to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to relay critical information regarding the patient's physiological and psychological status.

4. Evaluates the patient, family, and environment for safety hazards, actively seeking out and implementing safety measures.

Diagnosis and Planning - Leverages gathered data to formulate and prioritize a list of actual and potential individualized patient concerns and needs.

1. Develops, coordinates, and updates a multidisciplinary care plan in partnership with the patient and family, supporting the TCH model of care/Patient and Family Centered care. Each identified issue has a measurable goal.

2. Communicates the care plan using SBAR and handoff methodologies with all team members.

3. Establishes care priorities, discusses the care plan during shift handovers, and engages in care conferences.

4. Initiates discharge planning upon admission, making suitable referrals in line with the expected duration of stay.

Implementation – The approach to delivering evidence-based, quality care is informed by assessed needs and established standards while adhering to hospital policies and procedures to meet defined objectives.

1. Executes and delegates nursing interventions based on appropriate directives, demonstrating critical thinking and accountability for effective implementation.

2. Provides ongoing, individualized holistic education to patients and families based on their needs and the care plan in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

3. Exhibits critical thinking when reviewing physician orders, making appropriate referrals, and contacting other healthcare professionals.

4. Responds adeptly to emergency situations requiring immediate, precise actions.

5. Implements strategies to prevent contamination and/or disease transmission, utilizing appropriate protective equipment to ensure a safe environment.

Evaluation – Continuously assesses nursing practice concerning the care plan in relation to standards established through evidence-based literature and guidelines from professional organizations integrated into order sets in the electronic medical record, individual care plans, and patient outcomes.

1. Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions, modifying or continuing the care plan based on patient and family feedback.

2. Ensures continuity of care through ongoing evaluation during handoff reports, rounding, and transfers to other specialty units and post-care facilities.

Documentation

The nursing process is accurately and succinctly recorded in the patient's electronic medical record, reflecting the care plan as executed by the patient, family, and multidisciplinary team.

Documentation is completed promptly, in accordance with hospital policies, including the care plan, updates, education provided, and the patient's and family's responses to care.

Leadership and Professional Development

Demonstrates leadership capabilities such as motivating, educating, delegating, and mentoring peers and other healthcare team members while effectively managing patient and family care.

Takes responsibility for personal and professional growth and development. Contributes to the professional advancement of colleagues and others.

1. Engages in 75% of staff meetings and 75% of council meetings as appropriate.

2. Participates in unit-based initiatives for performance enhancement, evidence-based projects, and research as necessary.

3. Involves in council activities and task forces aimed at improving competencies for self, colleagues, and staff members related to patient care.

4. Supports self and peers in professional development by utilizing resources and opportunities available within and outside of The Christ Hospital.

5. Engages in self and peer review activities, including recognizing peers and staff positively on a regular basis.

6. Acts as a resource, educator, and mentor for multidisciplinary team members, staff, and nursing students, consistently evaluating and documenting competency.

7. Maintains proficiency in point-of-care testing relevant to unit-specific nursing practices.

Employee Responsibilities

Adheres to organizational and departmental policies and required training.

Completes all educational requirements to maintain competency related to specific patient populations and/or regulatory agencies in a timely manner.

Submits necessary tests and documentation promptly without requiring management intervention.

Attendance

Complies with the time and attendance policy; arrives at work punctually, maintains a satisfactory attendance record, utilizes identification badges for clocking in and out, and submits time-off requests well in advance.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL:

EDUCATION:


• The organization employs Associate Degree and Diploma nurses; however, all nurses hired after a certain date must obtain their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within five years of their start date. RNs employed prior to this date with over 20 years of experience are permitted to pursue their BSN voluntarily.

A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is not mandatory but supersedes the BSN requirement.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: None required

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The RN demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate and culturally sensitive patient care and education. The RN effectively communicates with colleagues, utilizes appropriate communication channels, and maintains strict confidentiality. The RN maintains competence and demonstrates evidence of ongoing professional development. The RN exhibits the ability to accept and implement change and to work in a culturally diverse environment.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

The RN possesses a current license to practice nursing in Ohio. Membership in professional organizations is advantageous. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required prior to patient interaction. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within six months of employment in step-down and intensive care areas. Certification in the area of clinical specialty is expected within five years of eligibility.
