Organization Overview
The People's Music School stands as Chicago's premier nonprofit music institution, dedicated to offering free, high-quality music education to a diverse range of students. Our mission is to ensure that young individuals, particularly those from underrepresented communities, have access to transformative music instruction that fosters not only musical skills but also personal growth.
Role Summary
The primary responsibility of the Teaching Artist will be to conduct both small group and individual lessons, utilizing a curriculum that encompasses music theory, performance techniques, improvisation, and composition.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Instruction (90%)
- Provide exceptional music instruction to students in grades 1-12, integrating theory and composition into lessons.
- Serve as a dedicated and empathetic mentor to each student.
- Engage actively in faculty meetings, student performances, and assessment processes.
- Incorporate pedagogical strategies discussed in professional development sessions into teaching practices.
- Deliver high-quality instruction that promotes excellence in student performance.
Administrative Duties (10%)
- Assess and report on students' musical and behavioral progress.
- Collaborate effectively with families, administrative staff, and fellow educators.
- Maintain timely communication with the Program Manager and school personnel.
- Prepare substitute lesson plans as needed.
- Supervise students during transitions and breaks.
- Assist with additional projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in music education or performance, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated high level of musicianship, including knowledge of music theory and performance skills.
- Experience teaching music to children of varying ages and skill levels is preferred.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and adaptability in teaching methods.
- Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a dynamic educational environment.
- Familiarity with a wide range of musical repertoire suitable for diverse student populations.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience working collaboratively with individuals from various cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Alignment with the mission and values of The People's Music School.
Physical Requirements
- Occasional lifting and moving of items up to 20 pounds may be required.
Compensation
Hourly rates range from $47 to $60, depending on the type of class.
