Public Health Dental Hygiene Specialist

The Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner is a key member of our team at North Side Christian Health Center, responsible for delivering high-quality dental care services to our patients. This role involves performing dental measures to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of oral disease, providing education services, and maintaining accurate records of dental treatment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform topical fluoride treatments and screen patients for dental caries, periodontal disease, and medical history.
- Conduct supra and sub-gingival scaling and curettage, root planning, and gross debridement in treatment of acute periodontal conditions.
- Condition teeth for and apply dental sealants, initiate dental prevention and education, and perform oral cancer screenings.
- Analyze dental records and formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans, perform oral radiography, and provide timely responses to patient and employee inquiries.
- Assist in training of dental assistants and new dental hygienists, complete thorough and timely clinical documentation in EMR, and refer patients to a licensed dentist on an annual basis.
- Consistently practice universal precautions, participate in health promotion, education, and prevention programs, and administer local anesthesia by regional injection in accordance with Pa. Code 33.115.
- Maintain instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment, assist in ordering dental supplies and materials, and provide reminders of next hygiene visit to patients and manage the clinic's recall system.
- Travel to Health Center's satellite office to provide dental services, transport necessary equipment and instruments, and be responsible for all care and cleaning of dental equipment and service facility area at satellite clinic and off-site.
- Collaborate with medical and behavioral health staff to provide interdisciplinary care to patients, assist with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments during treatment of patients, and perform all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a licensed Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner eligible to practice in the State of Pennsylvania.
- Must have current knowledge of and practice experience in dental hygiene, public health orientation through training, experience, or professional interest, and current BCLS certification.
- Must have current Radiology certification, OSHA/HIPAA certification, and individual liability insurance in the minimum $3 million per annual aggregate.
- Must have own reliable transportation, good driving record, and car insurance, and meet professional behavior expectations as evidenced by compliance with the following standards.
Physical Requirements/Demands
- Prolonged sitting and/or standing and moving about throughout the workday.
- Potential exposure to biohazardous materials, including ionizing radiation.
- Requires vision and hearing in normal range, dexterity to type 40 wpm, and use of telephone and computer.
