Role Summary

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) plays a vital role in overseeing caregiver staff during their shifts, ensuring the delivery of high-quality resident care while adhering to the residence's philosophy and prioritizing resident well-being. The CMA is responsible for the accurate administration of scheduled medications to residents, in compliance with state regulations and Oaks Senior Living policies. This position also involves providing personalized care and services, responding effectively to emergencies, and safeguarding residents' rights to safe and confidential treatment.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of experience in a Senior Living environment.
  • Preferred supervisory experience in healthcare or service industries.
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
  • Genuine compassion and a desire to work with older adults.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and pass a criminal history check.
  • Completion of a physical examination by a licensed physician and a negative drug screening.
  • Able to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Main Responsibilities

Resident Care

  • Execute assigned duties efficiently as directed by the Wellness Director or Executive Director, supervising caregiver staff to ensure quality care aligned with Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Adhere to each resident's Negotiated Service Plan and promptly inform the Wellness Director or Executive Director of any changes in resident conditions.
  • Respond immediately to resident calls for assistance.
  • Seek guidance from the Executive Director or Wellness Director when uncertain about medication administration or treatments.
  • Assist with meal service and supervise caregiver staff in the dining area, ensuring cleanliness post-meal.
  • Implement infection control measures by following standard precautions and disposing of waste appropriately.
  • Foster positive relationships with residents and their families.
  • Handle resident emergencies according to established procedures.
  • Assist in scheduling caregiver staff to meet resident needs and ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Address on-the-job injuries following Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Complete required continuing education units (CEUs) biennially and annually as mandated.
  • Promote teamwork and exemplify the Oaks Senior Living philosophy.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.

Medication Management

  • Adhere to the six 'rights' of medication administration, verifying each step diligently.
  • Administer medications as per the Medication Observation Record (MOR) while safeguarding resident privacy and documenting accurately.
  • Respect residents' rights to refuse medication and ensure their safety during administration.
  • Monitor residents for adverse reactions to medications and report findings immediately.

Communication

  • Participate in regular staff meetings and required training sessions.
  • Effectively communicate residents' needs during shift changes and report any significant changes in their condition.
  • Ensure all required documentation for resident care is current and complete.

Physical Requirements

To fulfill the responsibilities of this role, employees must be capable of performing essential physical tasks for extended periods. Key physical requirements include:

  • Standing or walking for up to eight hours daily.
  • Sitting for up to two hours daily.
  • Frequently lifting up to 70 pounds and occasionally carrying up to 15 pounds.
  • Regularly kneeling, bending, and reaching, with assistance for resident transfers as needed.
