Job Title: Veterinary TechnicianJob Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our Animal Care and Protective Services team in Jacksonville, FL. As a Veterinary Technician, you will play a critical role in the maintenance of kennel facilities, providing care and support to sheltered animals, and assisting veterinarians with medical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Care and feeding of sheltered animals
  • Performance of related clerical and customer support work
  • Support to veterinarians and veterinary technician supervisor in routine medical, surgical, and/or necropsy procedures
  • Maintenance of kennel facilities, including cleaning and disinfecting areas
  • Administration of basic medical treatments under the direction of a veterinarian
  • Taking vital signs of animals
  • Feeding and caring for critical animals in the medical areas
  • Retrieving, restraining, and assisting with medical examinations of animals
  • Utilizing and maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Performing radiographs
  • Preparing, maintaining, and retrieving records, reports, and detailed and accurate medical histories of animals housed at the facility
  • Maintaining inventory of medications, medical equipment, medical supplies, food, cleaning, and care supplies
  • Performing euthanasia as taught by the FACA-approved class and in compliance with the ACPS euthanasia protocol
  • Providing customer assistance and information concerning animals and adoption policies
  • Collecting redemption and adoption fees and maintaining records of monies collected as required
  • Drawing blood, preparing, and handling lab specimens and performing routine lab tests
Requirements:
  • Two years of education and/or technical experience in biology, animal husbandry, herd management, animal handling/care, veterinary technician, pre-med or pre-veterinary, medical, phlebotomy, or laboratory technician experience
  • Successfully passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become certified as a Veterinary Technician may be substituted for six months of experience
  • Euthanasia Technician Certification must be obtained prior to completion of probation
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver
Working Conditions:

The work is performed in an animal shelter environment, where there are some risks and hazards due to the handling of vicious, ill, infectious, and rabid animals, and exposure to offensive odors, chemicals, and other airborne nuisances.

The physical demands consist mainly of standing, walking, transporting animals, and lifting animals and/or objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
