Automotive Technician

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking a skilled Automotive Mechanic to join our team. As an Automotive Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing complex automotive work involving inspections, modifications, maintenance, and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles, including gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
- Diagnosing and repairing complex automotive issues, including car and truck repairs, air conditioning, axle and transaxle, and airbrake systems
- Inspecting and maintaining auxiliary and control systems
- Conducting thorough inspections of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A high school diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution
- Three years of journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive work involving inspection, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, and repair on complex automotive and other special equipment
- New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License (selected applicants without this license must obtain within six months of hire for continued employment)
- A valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's (CDL) Permit with the air brakes endorsement or higher before the first day of work and will be required to obtain a Class A CDL License with endorsements within three months of employment
The ideal candidate will have:
- The ability to work a 40-hour week, including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed, and during inclement weather and emergencies
Candidates will be assessed via a written exam and a practical exam. The written exam will cover topics such as combustion engines, electrical systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, hydraulic brake systems, steering and suspension systems, light and heavy-duty truck repair, hybrid vehicle technology, and late model vehicle technology and diagnostics.
Candidates who qualify on the written exam will be eligible to be considered for the next step in the evaluation process, a Practical Examination.
The practical exam will measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or electrical/electronic inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.

The starting salary for the Auto Mechanic is $86,266.44 annually. Auto Mechanics are eligible for step increases (subject to collective bargaining agreement).
