Carpenter Animal Hospital Kennel Attendant Job Description

Carpenter Animal Hospital & Pet Inn is a full-service small animal veterinary hospital located in the northwestern part of Cary, NC. We offer a wide variety of services to care for all of your pet's needs.

Job Summary:

A Kennel Attendant provides daily care, feeding, and exercise of boarding and hospitalized pets. He or she also pays close attention to pets' status, such as signs of stress and changes in eating or elimination habits, and promptly notifies technicians and veterinarians when a pet needs medical attention.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide compassionate care to boarding pets and hospitalized patients.
  2. Walk through the kennel area regularly, checking each pet for any abnormal activity such as vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in the cage or run.
  3. Report abnormal activity to doctors and technicians, pull patient's medical record.
  4. Recognize emergency situations, enlisting the aid of doctors and technicians.
  5. Mark records correctly for eating, drinking, and elimination habits.
  6. Feed and water animals according to schedules.
  7. Clean and disinfect cages, runs, and yard as needed, using hoses and spray bottles of disinfectant.
  8. Clean cat litter boxes and disinfect kitty condos.
  9. Clean and disinfect all food and water bowls.
  10. Wear personal protective equipment required for the area and maintain the personal protective equipment in good working order.
  11. Move pets to the yard or other areas so runs can be disinfected; return animal to correct run after the run is clean and dry.
  12. Remove soiled bedding and take it to the laundry area.
  13. Place clean bedding in runs.
  14. Operate washer and dryer to clean kennel bedding and hospital laundry.
  15. Give baths to animals that qualify for a bath before they go home.
  16. Administer medications to pets that require medications while boarding.
  17. Supervise animals when they are in the yard.
  18. Perform 'TLC' play times or walks for clients who have requested it.
  19. Check-in animals for boarding, talk with owners, write specific feeding and medication instructions, play times, walks, additional services; Record all information on boarding forms.
  20. Place ID collars on all animals.
  21. Administer flea and tick control on all animals.
  22. Take pets to the treatment area for all medical services to be administered.
  23. Record and label all personal belongings.
  24. Record medication instructions on the kennel medication board.
  25. Check out animals for boarding, talk with owners, return all personal belongings, and review boarding report card with client.
  26. Take animals to the exam room if there is a doctor discharge.
  27. Make medical records for animals needing a doctor exam, inform receptionists that there are now doctor charges and a doctor discharge is needed.
  28. Collect any samples requested by the doctor or technician.
  29. Know proper animal restraint techniques.
  30. Maintain food and supply storage areas.
  31. Understand infectious diseases and how to control and prevent their spread.
Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds.
  • Endure sitting, standing, and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to be confident around pets.
  • Able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment that can be moderately high.
  • Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances.
  • Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with all clients and team members.
