Position Summary:
The Traveling Passenger Rail Mechanic, referred to at Drummac as a Traveling Qualified Mechanical Person (QMP), is tasked with the inspection and repair of passenger cars, freight cars, utility vehicles, and locomotives as required. This role also encompasses significant involvement in the restoration of passenger cars and essential preventative maintenance tasks. Adherence to corporate policies, health and safety protocols, and all relevant local, state, and federal regulations is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct air brake inspections on passenger and private cars, possessing knowledge of air brake systems to troubleshoot and repair issues as necessary.
- Perform locomotive inspections as required (daily, 92-day, and annual) and execute necessary repairs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve rolling stock issues, including but not limited to HVAC systems, air brakes, electrical systems, door mechanisms, and truck and suspension systems.
- Execute electrical tests, disassemble, replace, repair, modify, rebuild, assemble, adjust, and maintain batteries and all electrical components on locomotives.
- Complete regulatory, client, and company documentation accurately.
- Be available for overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as required.
- Adapt to flexible scheduling to meet dynamic train schedules.
- Communicate effectively with management both verbally and in writing.
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions as needed.
- Utilize required protective equipment while performing job duties.
- Take personal responsibility for safety while on the job.
- Willingness to travel to various sites and projects 50% - 75% of the time is essential.
- Maintain documentation and reports as necessary.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- A valid driver's license is mandatory.
- A minimum of 2.5 years of experience in railroad locomotive mechanics, locomotive electrical work, heavy industrial equipment, or diesel mechanical maintenance is required. Trade school graduates will also be considered.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Ability to multitask with strong time management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of FRA regulations, OSHA standards, DOT regulations, and other applicable federal, state, and local standards is required.
- Possession of certifications for CFR 229, 236, and 238 is necessary. Familiarity with GCOR and NORAC safety protocols is also preferred.
- Capability to work in diverse environments, including those with hazardous conditions, which may involve lifting or exerting force exceeding 50 lbs.
- Must hold appropriate licenses and certifications.
- Ability to work beyond regular hours when necessary.
- Willingness to travel overnight as business needs dictate.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and substance screening process, including employment verifications, criminal history, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) checks, is required to ensure compliance with company policy standards.
