Beyond intraoperative responsibilities, surgical assistants also engage in preoperative and postoperative tasks to enhance patient care.
These professionals operate under the guidance and supervision of the surgeon, adhering to hospital policies and relevant laws and regulations.
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Medical Center (CSRH-MC) is situated in the South Texas Medical Center, offering exceptional care through compassionate service, experienced medical professionals, and cutting-edge technology, including the da Vinci Surgical Robot System and the MakoTM Robotic-Arm Assisted System.
The 178-bed facility provides a range of services, including Acute Care of the Elderly Unit, cardiology, diabetes management, emergency services, general surgery, kidney transplantation at the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute, orthopedics, outpatient rehabilitation, aquatic therapy, Senior Behavioral Health Center, urology, and the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fulfill the expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Assist the surgeon under both direct and indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative duties and procedures.
- Facilitate the safe positioning of patients in accordance with the surgeon's preferences, the patient's anatomical and physiological limits, and the surgical procedure being performed. A preoperative assessment may be conducted to evaluate the surgical site for optimal positioning.
Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, intravenous catheter placement, cricoid pressure application, and other necessary procedures.
- Execute specific tasks based on individual surgeon preferences using appropriate techniques, including but not limited to: incision and layered closure of surgical sites, providing exposure, achieving hemostasis through injection, manual, and topical methods, applying appropriate energy sources, and manipulating and dissecting/removing tissues. Assist in the implantation, securing, and/or removal of devices and drains, and applying suitable dressing materials specific to the procedure.
- Apply any other specific dressing materials such as splints or casts. Assess skin integrity, assist in patient transfer, and follow the patient to recovery if required or directed by the surgeon.
- Perform additional procedures under surgeon supervision, including but not limited to: vein and graft harvesting, and graft and implant preparation, if appropriately trained.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the surgeon in compliance with state and local policies.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Graduation from an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program, State Board accredited Vocational School of Nursing, or Graduate of School of Surgical Technology is required. A minimum of 2 years of Surgical Tech experience is preferred. BLS certification is required. Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant certification is required. ACLS certification is preferred.
