Role Summary:

The Physical Therapy Assistant plays a vital role in supporting physical therapists in delivering effective rehabilitation treatments and procedures. This position involves assisting in the formulation of treatment plans, executing routine tasks, documenting patient progress, and adjusting specific treatments based on patient conditions within the framework established by a licensed physical therapist.

Supervisory Duties: None

Budgetary Responsibilities: None

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide, motivate, and ensure the safety of patients during their exercise or functional activities. Monitor patients throughout treatments to gather and assess data on their responses and improvements, reporting findings to the supervising physical therapist either verbally or through written notes.
  • Collaborate with physical therapy personnel and other healthcare professionals to review and assess patient information for the purpose of planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment strategies. Educate caregivers and family members about patient therapeutic activities and care plans.
  • Assist in transporting patients to and from therapy areas, ensuring proper lifting and transferring techniques are utilized according to safety protocols. Secure patients in therapy equipment as necessary.
  • Administer both active and passive therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, aquatic therapy, and various modality treatments, including ultrasound.
  • Assess patients' range of motion, body measurements, and vital signs to evaluate treatment effectiveness or for patient assessments.
  • Oversee the operation of therapeutic equipment and maintain accurate records of equipment usage and treatment administration.
  • Fit patients with orthopedic devices, prosthetics, and supportive equipment such as crutches.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating physical and mental impairments.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Knowledge of various therapy techniques and methodologies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, ascend/descend stairs, and transport patients weighing over 100 pounds, as well as move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Capability to assist residents as needed, including stretching, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, crouching, kneeling, and balancing to position residents appropriately for therapy.
  • Visual acuity to observe resident movements and positions.
  • Ability to detect alarms and messages.
  • Competence in operating a computer, reading, and remaining stationary while conversing with others.
  • Ability to legibly complete forms and perform data entry. Capacity to remain stationary for extended periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to demonstrate tasks.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequent standing and walking, with the ability to sit for extended periods; capability for simple grasping and fine hand manipulation; ability to see near and far; hear conversations; and speak clearly.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: An Associate degree or certification from an accredited physical therapy program, including coursework in anatomy and physiology, along with clinical experience, is required.

Experience: Prior experience performing the essential functions of this role is preferred.

Certification/Licensure: A valid Florida Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) license in good standing is required. Candidates must obtain and maintain CPR certification within 90 days of hire. Compliance with state background check standards is mandatory for continued employment.
