Job Overview

Under the general oversight of the Medical Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory and the Director of Echocardiography, with direct guidance from the Adult Echo Lab Supervisor, the incumbent will conduct and document standard echocardiographic ultrasound examinations following departmental protocols and guidelines. The role involves operating various ultrasound devices, transducers, and supplementary equipment across diverse patient demographics. The technologist will identify normal and abnormal conditions, adjusting the examination as necessary to guarantee comprehensive and precise data collection. Responsibilities include preparing and positioning patients to achieve optimal imaging quality and interpreting collected data to generate preliminary reports in accordance with departmental standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct transthoracic echocardiograms on adult and elderly patients (40%).
  • Perform echocardiographic stress tests (treadmill, bicycle, dobutamine) (15%).
  • Execute cardiac ultrasound enhancement agent studies (5%).
  • Pre-read and analyze acquired echocardiographic studies (15%).
  • Engage in team meetings and discussions (5%).
  • Contribute to IAC-required data collection and IAP goal initiatives (5%).
  • Participate in research projects, adhering to assigned protocols (5%).
  • Assist in the onboarding process for new sonographers and housestaff (5%).
  • Perform additional duties as required, including basic instruction in POCUS for housestaff/students (5%).

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated capability to operate independently in both outpatient and acute care settings.
  • Support inpatient services and outpatient clinics with echocardiography studies.
  • Thorough understanding of ultrasound principles, anatomy, and pathology processes, utilizing appropriate techniques.
  • Proficient in performing ultrasound tests using various modalities, including 2D, 3D, M-mode, spectral Doppler, and tissue Doppler.
  • Experience in conducting stress echo exams proficiently.
  • Ability to place peripheral intravenous catheters and administer ultrasound enhancement agents.
  • Effective communication with patients to gather medical history and explain procedures in a professional manner.
  • Professional interaction with staff, faculty, and referring physicians.
  • Prepare preliminary clinical reports based on findings, including data entry and analysis.
  • Recognize clinical issues and communicate findings to the reading team.
  • Engage in teaching fundamental echocardiography principles to housestaff and ultrasound students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited cardiac sonographer training program.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Minimum of one year of post-graduate experience in adult cardiac echocardiography.
  • Current registry through ARDMS (RDCS) or CCI (RCS, RCCS, ACS).
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a formal accredited ultrasound training program.
  • Experience in an academic hospital setting as a cardiac sonographer.
  • Familiarity with adult congenital heart disease and advanced heart failure patients.
  • Experience with advanced therapies such as LVAD, ECMO, TAVR, and Mitra-Clip.
  • Knowledge of EPIC EMR and Syngo Dynamics systems.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • RDCS Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, or RCS Registered Cardiac Sonographer, or RCCS Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification.
