The Network Administrator IV at UW Green Bay is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the university's wired and wireless data networks. This highly technical role requires expertise in a wide range of network technologies and security, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and security appliances.

The successful candidate will work with a small team of technicians and student workers to support network connectivity, and collaborate with other IT staff to ensure seamless client, server, and network services throughout the university.

The Network Administrator IV will be responsible for:

  • Designing and maintaining the university's network connections, including edge switches, building concentrators, core network switch equipment, firewalls, wireless access points, and routers
  • Evaluating and procuring new network equipment; overseeing installation of hardware, firmware, and management software for network devices
  • Continuously monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing network performance. Tracking and addressing network issues, and troubleshooting problems that are beyond the capabilities of installation and monitoring staff.
  • Documenting procedures for critical installations and repairs. Providing training for technical staff on mission-critical installations.
  • Designing and maintaining Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and environmental monitoring solutions for network and server equipment
  • Monitoring device logs for potential security threats, such as virus infections and excessive bandwidth usage. Notifying the Information Technology Security Office (ITSO) and assisting with incident remediation.
  • Overseeing connections to and coordinating upgrades with the UW-System data network
  • Assigning and configuring TCP/IP addresses for clients, servers, and specialized devices, ensuring proper configuration across the network
  • Installing, configuring, and testing new firewall software releases, ensuring optimal functionality for bandwidth management, traffic filtering, and VPN access
  • Modifying firewall security rules to accommodate changes in server and network environments, enhancing security while maintaining required functionality
  • Regularly reviewing firewall logs to identify potential security issues and recommending improvements to optimize network security
  • Monitoring firewall flows to detect malware or virus-infected workstations. Notifying the ITSO and assisting in resolving these issues.
  • Serving as a key member of the Information Technology Security Incident Response Team, contributing to the development of university-wide security procedures
  • Assessing current and future network needs, developing long-range plans for network expansion and enhancement
  • Creating technical drawings, budget plans, and project documentation for upcoming initiatives to aid in Division planning and

To be considered for this position, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or an applicable field, and three years of experience in managing medium to large-scale wired and wireless network infrastructures. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and extensive work experience of Ethernet network design and implementation, including copper and/or fiber optic circuits, switches, routers, firewall, network intrusion detection, network intrusion prevention, network access control, virtual private networking, and/or network management equipment and systems.

Preferred qualifications include experience in a higher education environment, in-depth understanding of the computer field with a focus on Microsoft Windows server operating systems, Macintosh operating systems, and Android/Apple IOS mobile.
