Registered Nurse - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the healthcare provider in the daily management of Oral Surgery treatments and consultations.
  • Prepare and assist patients for their surgical procedures.
  • Facilitate surgeries that involve conscious sedation.
  • Be prepared to initiate and engage in patient resuscitation during emergencies, adhering to BLS, PALS, and ACLS protocols.
  • Accurately measure, monitor, and document vital signs, medications, and patient treatments.
  • Review and update patient medical histories regularly.
  • Oversee the management of controlled substances.
  • Stay updated on medication changes and communicate these to the Oral Surgeon and support staff.
  • Conduct daily inspections of surgical instruments, materials, and specialized equipment in the operating rooms.
  • Liaise with Primary Care and Specialty Physicians for necessary Medical Release/Clearance forms prior to treatment, ensuring all clinic notes are complete and follow up on any outstanding results.
  • Provide guidance to patients and their families on pre-operative and post-operative care instructions.
  • Assist in delivering smoking cessation resources to patients.
  • Enter patient information and manage medication documentation in the Electronic Health Record system.
  • Help maintain adequate supply levels.
  • Offer assistance in the operating room for patients undergoing general anesthesia and surgical interventions.
  • Deliver post-operative care and instructions to patients and their families recovering from surgical procedures.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of the Crash Cart.
  • Maintain records and statistics regarding medications dispensed.
  • Dispense medications necessary for surgical interventions.
  • Prepare and label medications for intravenous procedures.
  • Regularly check medications and supplies for expiration dates.
  • Administer IV medications and maintain accurate records of dispensed medications.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols, including the cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments and the disinfection of operatory and laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor and follow up with patients to schedule necessary follow-up appointments.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Must possess an associate degree in nursing; a Bachelor's Degree in nursing is preferred. A minimum of two years of medical/surgical experience is required. Knowledge of infectious diseases, cross-contamination, and sterility is essential. Experience with conscious sedation and managing medical emergencies is mandatory.

Utilize evidence-based practices as recommended by the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).


Language Proficiency:
Ability to read and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Proficient in reading and analyzing medical documents. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.

Reasoning Skills:
Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Capable of interpreting various instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule formats. Ability to work independently.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed by the Texas Board of Registered Nurses. Jurisprudence certification is required. BLS certification is mandatory. PALS and ACLS certifications must be obtained within 30 days of employment.

Technical Skills:
Demonstrate proficiency in using the Internet, Outlook, Word, Excel, and electronic dental records software. Familiarity with other digital dental diagnostic software and instruments is necessary.

Additional Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license and auto liability insurance, with the ability to drive and access a vehicle.

The role requires bending, stooping, twisting, turning, walking, climbing step stools, sitting, and standing for extended periods. Must be capable of lifting and maneuvering at least 25 pounds.
