UCLA Samueli is seeking a seasoned communications professional to serve as a Senior Writer and Public Information Officer (PIO). As part of the school's Communications team, this individual will play a key role in elevating the school's brand and reputation among its constituents.

Job Summary

The Senior Writer/PIO will leverage their substantial media relationships and expertise in translating technical and scientific research into compelling content for general audiences. This includes developing and maintaining strategic media relations plans, identifying and capturing media relations metrics, and working with social media to build and strengthen the School brand.

Responsibilities
  • Media Relations: Develop and maintain strategic media relations plans, including media lists and outreach efforts, to secure coverage for UCLA Engineering faculty and research.
  • Content Creation: Write and edit electronic publications, web content, and social media posts that showcase the work of UCLA Engineering faculty and students.
  • Social Media Management: Coordinate with the Communications team to post on the school's main social media channels, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
  • Event Planning: Assist in planning and executing high-profile media events, such as press conferences and photo opportunities.
  • Metrics and Analysis: Identify, capture, and deliver media relations metrics to demonstrate ROI and inform future communications strategies.
Requirements
  • A minimum of five (5) years of full-time professional experience in journalism and media relations, with demonstrated success in working with print, broadcast, and electronic news outlets.
  • Strong relationships with mainstream science and technology reporters, both regionally (Los Angeles), nationally, and internationally.
  • Superior newsroom writing (AP Style) and editing skills, with a proven track record of translating technical and scientific research into compelling content for general audiences.
  • Experience spearheading high-profile media events and fielding a large number of incoming media inquiries.
  • Expertise in identifying, capturing, and delivering media relations metrics to demonstrate ROI.
  • Advanced knowledge of working with social media to build and strengthen School brand.
  • Ability to think creatively and critically, prioritize workload efficiently, and effectively work with a team in a fast-paced setting.

Estimated Salary
