Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician and the APP Supervisor, the Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the primary medical oversight of oncology and BMT patients. This role exemplifies professionalism and leadership core competencies, serving as a vital link within the BMT Program to ensure cohesive medical management across the healthcare continuum by collaborating with a multidisciplinary care team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct specialized procedures including bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and skin biopsies.
  • Present patient cases during daily rounds and participate in weekly BMT Clinical meetings.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and staff.
  • Support the formulation and revision of BMT divisional policies and procedures.
  • Engage in research initiatives and community outreach, networking with local physicians and healthcare professionals.
  • May deliver care to BMT patients in outpatient settings.
  • Adapt and expand role responsibilities as patient and system needs evolve.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
  • Possession of a California Physician Assistant (PA) license.
  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at the time of hire, with a commitment to obtain ART within six months of hire.
  • At least one year of recent experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in Oncology, BMT, or adult critical care.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the BMT process and hematological malignancies, including knowledge of patient pathology, expected outcomes, and lab results.
  • Ability to recognize the medical and psychosocial needs of patients with cancer.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with a talent for motivating team members.
  • High level of professionalism with excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of functioning within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Comfortable in group teaching environments and willing to engage in community outreach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in inpatient Hematology/Oncology/BMT or adult critical care.
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy administration and common blood and marrow transplant medications.
  • Experience in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Clinical Trials and the ability to identify potential Clinical Trials patients.

Special Conditions:

  • Must be available to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call, and locations based on the Medical Center's operational needs.
  • Employment is contingent upon a criminal background check and pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must obtain and maintain UCSD Medical Staff privileges during employment.
  • Clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $198,485 - $198,485 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $95.06

Compensation factors include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and other organizational needs.
