Phoenix, Arizona, United States Blue Origin Full time
About Blue Origin

At Blue Origin, we aspire to see millions of individuals thriving in space, contributing to the well-being of our planet.

Our mission is to create reusable, secure, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a framework that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and inclusivity.

Join our diverse group of innovators as we continue to write the story of space exploration.

This position is integral to the New Shepard program, a reusable suborbital rocket system aimed at transporting astronauts and research payloads beyond the Kármán line, the globally recognized threshold of space.

Through operational reusability, New Shepard plays a crucial role in our objective of making space more accessible.

Role Overview

As a member of the New Shepard Avionics team, you will be responsible for the design, development, and validation of high-performance hardware for various flight vehicles.

Your team will oversee the design, testing, integration, and maintenance of all avionics systems on the vehicle, which includes flight computers, RF communications, vehicle controls, navigation instruments, power systems, astronaut audio and video, data acquisition, and more.

You will collaborate closely with our rocket program and technical leads to define requirements, model, analyze, design, test, and release components and subsystems.

Your responsibilities will include electronic requirements, architectural concepts, detailed design, and development. Additionally, you will ensure avionics designs undergo formal verification, environmental qualification, and participate in flight support activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mentor and guide other avionics engineers within the RF team.
  • Take ownership of design modifications and implementation of team standards, processes, and plans.
  • Engage frequently with both internal and external stakeholders within the NS Avionics Team.

We seek an individual who can leverage their technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and commitment to quality to enhance the safety of human spaceflight.

A passion for our mission and vision is essential.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Over 10 years of proven experience in RF design for complex aerospace or space hardware.
  • A hands-on approach, working independently and collaboratively throughout the design, verification, qualification, and production phases of the electronic product lifecycle.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

In addition to the general qualifications, a Lead RF Systems Engineer will possess expertise in several of the following areas:

  • Design of RF communication subsystems and components, with a strong foundation in RF principles, particularly in UHF and S-band RF for vehicle and ground station development.
  • Experience in planning and defining RF systems, including RF link budgets, antenna placement planning, and conducting site tests.
  • Collaboration with multi-functional teams such as mechanical, ground, and operations to achieve optimal design implementation solutions.
  • Working alongside manufacturing engineers to create and approve assembly drawings.
  • Partnering with production engineering to develop and support sustaining engineering plans and procedures.
  • Development and ownership of test procedures, along with planning and execution for all phases (development, acceptance, and qualification).
  • Knowledge of grounding and general board layout principles, including EMI/EMC trade-offs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or related fields.
  • 15+ years of proven experience in RF design, development, integration, testing, and operation of avionics systems or vehicles.
  • Experience in specifying and crafting high-reliability safety-critical electronics; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254, and similar standards.
  • Background in launch vehicle hardware development, integration, and testing.
