Job Summary

The Transit Safety Ambassador plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of riders, particularly the most vulnerable members of our community. This position requires a unique blend of interpersonal skills, crisis management expertise, and a deep understanding of the complexities of public transportation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a warm and welcoming experience for riders, promoting a sense of safety and community.
  • Assist operations and security teams in managing incidents, including alcohol and drug use, fare conflicts, and rider code of conduct issues.
  • Reduce loitering and panhandling at transit centers, and address behaviors that impact the passenger experience.
  • Offer early detection and intervention for riders who need services, and improve visibility of system safety and security initiatives.
  • Improve communication between customers and security and operations staff, and address the unique needs of transit customers who don't have a stable living condition.
  • Perform outreach services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or housing insecurity issues, and provide linkages to services provided by local organizations.
  • Make mental health assessments and provide crisis counseling to the homeless community and individuals experiencing mental health-related issues within the SRTA system.
Requirements
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of professional experience in a related field, or two years of community service or similar experience interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with homeless advocate programs, behavioral health support programs, and interacting with the homeless community and/or individuals experiencing complex mental health issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate optimism, learn and understand public transit systems operations and service area, and perform work activities in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook, and good working knowledge of English, grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, and ability to read and write reports, memos, and develop presentations.
