Position Overview:

The Chief Financial Officer will act as the principal leader of the financial and accounting operations, overseeing all aspects of financial management, taxation, budgeting, and reporting functions. This role is critical in ensuring the effective management of the Colburn School's financial activities, policies, and practices, while maintaining accurate fiscal records and systems. The CFO will enhance internal accounting processes and systems, ensuring alignment with the School's strategic objectives and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Additionally, the CFO will support the Audit Committee by facilitating the preparation of audited financial statements.

Reporting Structure

The CFO will report directly to the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial and Operating Officer and will lead the accounting team under the Director of Accounting, while also collaborating closely with the Director of Budgeting and Reporting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily functions of the accounting department, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, student accounting, and investments.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of all accounting and regulatory reporting policies to guarantee compliance with GAAP and other best practices.
  • Support the School's mission and strategic plans through consistent policy and procedure adherence.
  • Enhance expense management and accounts payable processes, including the adoption of new software solutions.
  • Streamline monthly closing processes to ensure timely and precise financial reporting.
  • Provide direct support to the Chief Financial & Operating Officer on all accounting and tax-related matters.
  • Maintain robust internal controls and safeguards.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and the preparation of financial statements.
  • Regularly compile, analyze, and present financial data, including quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee financial, project/program, and grants accounting to ensure alignment with budgets throughout the funding period.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and treasury operations.
  • Interface with various external partners, including auditors and tax consultants.
  • Collaborate with the Philanthropy team to ensure accurate gift accounting and compliance.
  • Optimize the financial management system.
  • Lead the Accounting team, including recruitment, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
  • Foster a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Experience in coordinating audit activities and managing financial reporting, budget development, and analysis.

  • Familiarity with financial aid oversight.
  • Experience in contract management and strategic sourcing.
  • Knowledge of grants management and compliance.
  • Experience in the education or performing arts sector is preferred.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
  • CPA certification.
  • A minimum of ten years of relevant experience.
