Urban Planner

The Town of Garner is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Planner I to join our active Planning Department. As a key member of our team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our community.

• Assist in the intake and distribution of permits and plans for staff review, ensuring timely and efficient processing.
• Review permits and plans for compliance with adopted codes, ordinances, and policies, and manage related correspondence.
• Prepare and present staff reports for rezonings and special use permits, providing recommendations for review by the Planning Commission and Town Council.
• Utilize our permitting and plan review software to manage assigned cases and associated files.
• Contribute to research and preparation of Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) text amendments, working closely with senior staff.
• Assist in the collection and preparation of demographic and development data for section staff reports.
• Ensure compliance with all UDO-mandated public hearing notification requirements, working with section staff.
• Conduct site compliance inspections as assigned, ensuring adherence to regulations.
• Provide administrative support to the Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment, including agenda packet preparation and transcription of minutes.
• Attend evening meetings as required, representing the Planning Department.

• Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, or a related field.
• OR an Associate's degree in any major and at least three years of professional experience in land development, local government administration, or a similar field.
• Working knowledge of general office software and/or GIS technology.
• Previous urban planning experience is preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and good driving history.
