Crisis Clinician Job Description

Job Summary:

The Crisis Clinician plays a vital role in providing immediate, expert mental health support to community members experiencing crisis. As part of the Mobile Crisis Unit, this position requires a strong commitment to ensuring timely and compassionate intervention, promoting safety and well-being while fostering a supportive campus environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct triage and crisis evaluations, providing crisis intervention therapy for the Northwestern community.
  • Work closely with EMT, NUPD, and/or local law enforcement in response to emergency calls.
  • Provide brief and immediate mental health services or referral, linkage, and consultation with other mental health service providers.
  • Maintain clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts.
  • Consult with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, and other relevant campus partners.
  • Make referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, and facilitate voluntary and involuntary hospitalization when appropriate.
  • Develop close working relationships with other MCUs and agencies in the Evanston and Chicago area.
  • Report to assigned program supervisor and actively seek consultation whenever necessary or requested.

Requirements:

  • Hold a completed Master's degree in counseling, social work, or related field OR a doctoral level degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program.
  • Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as an independent mental health provider by the State of Illinois.
  • Three years post-graduate clinical experience, with one year specifically engaged in the provision of crisis services as a mental health clinician.
  • Meet eligibility requirements for Certified Drivers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in understanding the unique mental health issues/needs of individuals in mental health crises.
  • Previous experience working in a Managed Care or Mobile Crisis Unit.
  • Previous experience working in a comprehensive university counseling center.

Working Conditions:

Evenings, nights, and weekends required. Ability to transport self to a variety of different settings (on and off campus). Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
