Job Title: School Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse to join our team at Santa Fe Public Schools. As a School Nurse, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students.

Job Summary:

The School Nurse will provide comprehensive health services to students, including health screenings, immunizations, and first aid. You will also educate parents and staff about healthy practices and treatment conditions, and coordinate continuity of care between settings and caregivers.

Responsibilities:
  • Implement health policies and procedures of the local district and state health agencies.
  • Identify health problems through screening procedures, assessment, and evaluation of students.
  • Make appropriate referrals based on data obtained from screening procedures.
  • Make home visits when needs arise.
  • Maintain student health and immunization records and perform appropriate follow-up.
  • Provide emergency care and first aid for all students and employees.
  • Authorize exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Serve as a consultant and resource person to staff, parents, and medically fragile students by identifying community resources.
  • Advise teachers and consult with parents on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health concerns.
  • Serve on SST, IEP, and 504 meetings when the student has a health condition that affects their ability to learn.
  • Participate in in-service training programs, workshops, and continuing education to maintain professional credentials and competency.
  • Serve as a consultant in matters of school health, safety, health education, and sanitary conditions.
  • Assist Principal and Lead Nurse in performance of any other health-related assignments.
  • Respond to emergencies at other SFPS campuses.
  • Assist in supervising, training, and delegating assignments, medication administration, and procedures to medically fragile health assistants.
  • Develop and implement individual healthcare plans.
  • Manage and oversee the implementation of the District medication policy.
  • Review, administer, and document immunizations as deemed appropriate for student health. Work in immunization clinics.
  • Attend all mandatory in-service training meetings.
  • Participate in the ongoing operation of school-based health centers and act as a leader when appropriate.
  • Assist in preparing and administering a health services budget, seek opportunities to apply for outside sources of funding for the school health service program at district and campus levels.
  • Assume leadership in the establishment of a school health service advisory committee with representation from such groups as school administration, faculty, students, parents, and community providers.
  • Develop and implement research projects to attain pertinent health information.
  • Develop and implement relevant programs.
  • Use nursing processes to develop goals, objectives, action steps, and assessments of programs.
  • Coordinate planning with interdisciplinary colleagues at the national, state, and local levels, in the coordinated school health service program.
  • Act as a mentor and assist new district school nurses, and coordinate with local community professional health members, including student nurses and other health professionals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from a registered nursing program.
  • Licensed as a school nurse by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in school nursing, community health, or public health preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Working Conditions:

The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations, at times bending, squatting, and reaching. The ability to lift, carry, push up to 40 pounds. Physical strength and ability to assist injured students and staff members by positioning or moving them according to established procedures in emergencies. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Regularly exposed to disease and injury.

Salary Range:

$60,000 - $70,000 per year.
