Job Summary: This role is responsible for delivering comprehensive professional nursing care to patients throughout the peri-operative phase of their hospital stay. The position involves direct assistance to the surgeon, operating under their guidance and supervision, while providing direct care to surgical patients. The primary focus will be on the intraoperative phase, alongside taking charge of independent nursing responsibilities during preoperative assessments and post-operative evaluations. This position is collaborative with the surgical team.

Essential Functions:
Demonstrates expertise in sterile technique across all surgical areas, as evidenced by observations of the surgical team. Adheres to established procedures for identifying and rectifying any breaches in aseptic technique.

Performs first assisting interventions under the direction and supervision of the operating surgeon(s), which includes:
a. Careful tissue manipulation, recognizing the potential for injury and compromised blood supply.
b. Proficiently retracting and maintaining exposure of the operative area using instruments, suctioning, and sponging.
c. Providing hemostasis through various methods, including electrocautery, sponging/pressure, and other agents that promote coagulation.
d. Skillfully suturing using appropriate techniques for the tissue involved.
e. Executing wound closure under the direct supervision of the surgeon, which may encompass fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin.

Conducts interventions, skills, and procedures in alignment with accepted standards of surgical practice, policies, and procedures within the surgical suite.

These include, but are not limited to:

Preparing the Operating Room with necessary supplies and equipment based on the patient's status; ensuring patient safety and comfort; managing patient transfer and positioning; maintaining asepsis and sterile fields; ensuring patient well-being, including fluid balance and skin integrity; demonstrating competency in equipment and supplies; investigating unfamiliar procedures, techniques, and medications; utilizing time, equipment, and personnel effectively; adhering to correct sterilization procedures; minimizing time loss between cases; and utilizing physician preference cards.

Responsible for performing technical procedures necessary for job responsibilities in a safe, effective, efficient, legal, and professional manner. Takes initiative for personal education, growth, and development. Plans for cases with consideration of individual needs and is willing to assist in other roles to maintain high quality while controlling costs.
Assists with and/or performs wound closure in accordance with facility policy, demonstrating knowledge of various suture types and their appropriate applications.
Acts as a resource for staff, patients, and families regarding patient care, facilitating efficient and coordinated care to ensure positive patient outcomes.
Handles unexpected events and crisis situations professionally, remaining alert to potential issues and notifying the appropriate individuals as necessary.
All other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements:
Required:
Education - Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing.
Certifications - Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Preferred:
Education - Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
Experience - 5+ years of Surgical Nursing Experience.
Certifications - Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA).

Physical Requirements:

Very Heavy work - exerting over 25 pounds of force constantly, and/or more than 50 pounds frequently, and/or more than 100 pounds occasionally, and/or more than 100 pounds seldomly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
