Critical Care Respiratory Specialist

Summary: Under the direction of department management and according to policies and procedures as defined in Department Policy and Procedure Manuals, administer respiratory care procedures and treatments designed to assess, prevent, stabilize or remedy patients' respiratory dysfunction after completing orientation. Function independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities:
1. Administer standard Respiratory Care including but not limited to aerosol medication delivery, basic bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures. Provide for all aspects of airway management including aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy care, tracheostomy tube changes, endotracheal intubations, and extubations. May perform Pulmonary Function Testing as needed.
2. Perform all aspects of ventilator care to include setting up the ventilator and verifying function using specialized ventilator modes to manage patients' disease process. Provide for appropriate monitoring of these patients and provide appropriate weaning techniques.
3. Assume Charge Therapist responsibilities. Maintain and improve job knowledge and skills. Function independently with minimal supervision. Serve as a resource to other staff reflective of experience level. Provide in-services. Serve as a resource for physicians and other UNCHCS staff. Aid in training new staff members, students, and new physicians. Provide in-services as required.
4. Record completely all pertinent information pertaining to patient care procedures per hospital and departmental policies. Record patient information in department information system.
5. Be available to work on-call days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Education Requirements
Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program is required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Be licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board and registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care. Must be registered within 6 months of hire. BLS certification is required on hire.
Professional Experience Requirements
One (1) year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required.
Salary Information
This is a per diem position with a salary range of $24.13 - $34.70 per hour (Hiring Range). Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equity. This is a State position employed by UNC Health Care System.
