Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in providing high-quality patient care at Penn Medicine's Ambulatory Cancer Center. As a CNA, you will assist the practice manager and physicians in maintaining a patient/customer focus, supporting the delivery of exceptional care, and contributing to meeting or exceeding patient satisfaction and financial/operational targets.

Responsibilities:
  • Promptly room patients, utilizing the electronic medical record (EMR) to alert providers that patients are ready for their visit.
  • Review patients' medical, surgical, family, smoking history, allergies, medications, and notes in the EMR, and document any necessary information.
  • Obtain patients' vital signs and document them in the EMR.
  • Prepare charts for patient visits and ensure that all necessary information is available.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including walking, transfers, dressing, undressing, and preparing for exams.
  • Observe patients' conditions and communicate any abnormal data or changes to providers.
  • Perform specimen management tasks, including obtaining specimens for testing, performing laboratory and screening tests, and recording results in the EMR.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures by handing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, positioning patients, and performing other duties within the scope of responsibility.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency/code situations.
  • Demonstrate competence in observing, treating, and caring for patients served in the practice, whose ages may range from neonate to geriatric.
Clerical/Other Accountabilities:
  • Respond to telephonic patient care, including care coordination with specialists, ancillary services, hospitals, labs, home care agencies, and other involved health services.
  • Obtain and scan documents as necessary and required for visits, including test results, faxes, reports, notes, referrals, and other relevant information.
  • Complete medical forms and other clinical requests for information as necessary and required.
  • Prepare and send patient correspondence as required.
  • Assist nursing staff with maintaining patient education materials, as needed.
Environmental/Safety Accountabilities:
  • Adhere to universal body fluids precautions and infection control policies.
  • Dispose of infectious waste properly.
  • Promote infection control by using appropriate hand-washing techniques.
  • Ensure that patient care areas are kept neat, orderly, well-stocked, and properly prepared.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and equipment according to protocols and check that they are in proper working order.
  • Notify supervisors of malfunctions.
  • Set up equipment and instruments as per practice protocol.
  • Clean and restock equipment as needed.
  • Authorized to access secured areas to obtain items such as intravenous solutions and medication preparation supplies for the purpose of stocking and maintaining pars in medication carts.
  • Retrieve supplies and medications/blood products from tube systems.
  • Secure stock items in appropriate locations.
  • Deliver patient-specific medications/blood products to assigned nurses or providers.
  • Maintain temperature logs for refrigerators or rooms as needed.
  • Maintain a safe environment and protect patients from injury by observing patients who may be at risk for falls, confusion, disorientation, or wandering behaviors.
Credentials:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Certified Nurse Aid (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:

H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

In lieu of certification, must be a nursing student matriculated in an accredited BSN nursing program having minimally completed the nursing foundations/fundamentals clinical course with a 3.0 GPA overall and in the nursing major and continue to maintain a 3.0 GPA in all nursing major subjects.

In order for nursing students to maintain their position as a CNA, they must continue in a matriculated BSN program and present evidence with an official transcript documenting a 3.0 GPA overall and in the nursing major each semester to CPUP nursing leadership.

Nursing students employed as CNAs must immediately (within 24 hours) and in writing report to their supervisor and CPUP nursing leadership if they have not sustained the academic GPA requirement or discontinued/withdrawn from their matriculated BSN program.

Failure to meet and maintain nursing student requirements in lieu of certification will result in termination of your nursing assistant position.

If the Nursing Assistant completes a nursing degree and obtains nursing licensure, they may continue to practice within the scope of the Nursing Assistant job description until they are able to transition into a different position within or external to the organization.
