Financial Aid Counselor

New York Law School (NYLS) is seeking a dedicated Financial Aid Counselor to facilitate system support and execute electronic processes that transfer various data files between the Department of Education and the NYLS Banner system. This role involves managing and certifying all facets of the loan process, advising both incoming and continuing students on scholarships and the financial aid journey, and making necessary adjustments to financial aid packages. Additionally, the Financial Aid Counselor will provide backup support for various office staff members and participate in on-campus events organized by the Admissions and Student Financial Services Office as required.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a collaborative spirit within a team environment and possess the ability to foster an inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere in the office. A strong understanding of cultural awareness and agility is essential for effectively engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

This position will report directly to the Executive Director of Financial Aid.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Address and manage inquiries received through the financial aid inbox and phone line.
  • Oversee the internal financial aid calendar.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial aid award letters for newly admitted students.
  • Support the manual adjustment process for scholarships.
  • Facilitate budget loan increases, summer loan applications, consortium agreements, and certification of private and bar study loans through electronic transfer processes, as well as academic status changes for continuing students.
  • Guide incoming and continuing students through the financial aid process.
  • Assist the Executive Director of Financial Aid with both internal and external financial aid reporting.
  • Coordinate and manage the donor scholarship process.
  • Participate in events organized by the Office of Admissions and Student Financial Services.
  • Carry out additional projects and responsibilities as assigned, which may include outreach to admitted students, attending recruitment events, providing campus tours, system testing, updates, and training.
  • Fulfill any other duties necessary to support the school's goals, priorities, and outcomes, uphold our mission, and adhere to our organizational values.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree is required, along with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in higher education, and a strong understanding of PC database systems and database management.
  • Experience with Banner is essential, as well as proficiency in Win SCP, Argos, and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze data effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of interacting with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Significant experience in managing large volumes of mailings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential; a friendly, patient, diplomatic, and helpful demeanor is required.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and respect.
  • Exceptional time management skills are necessary.
  • Availability for evening and weekend events may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:

This position offers a competitive salary range of $60,000 to $70,000 annually, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
