Coral Reef Monitoring Scientist
Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST) is in search of a Coral Reef Monitoring Scientist - Lead for Bleaching Assessment. This role involves a hybrid work arrangement.
The ideal candidate will manage all facets of monitoring and documenting coral bleaching occurrences, both through field assessments and in partnership with collaborators. The individual will perform independent scientific and statistical evaluations to calibrate and validate coral bleaching prediction models and assess the effects of coral bleaching incidents.
Background: NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) employs remote sensing data to detect physical-environmental stressors that may affect marine ecosystems and resources. CRW utilizes satellite-derived sea surface temperatures and thermal anomaly algorithms to pinpoint when and where coral reef ecosystems are vulnerable to bleaching. Predictions of coral bleaching are utilized by reef managers, researchers, and the public to comprehend, document, and react to the escalating threat posed by marine heat waves.
Position Summary:
Applicants must exhibit extensive field experience in coral reef-related scientific programs and/or laboratories dedicated to documenting and disseminating information regarding climate change (or disease) impacts on reef-building corals or other ecologically significant coral reef-associated species. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Coral Reef Watch Coordinator to ensure the effective completion of tasks and the establishment of priorities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting the Coral Reef Watch Coordinator in fostering and sustaining domestic and international partnerships; strong interpersonal skills are essential.
• Identifying and utilizing synergies within NOAA and other long-term coral reef monitoring initiatives to enhance the collection of bleaching monitoring data.
• Engaging directly with other NOAA laboratories involved in coral reef research to maximize the information obtained from existing monitoring efforts.
• To aid in the calibration and validation of CRW bleaching predictions, the candidate must:
+ Have demonstrable, hands-on experience assessing the impacts of environmental stressors on coral reef ecosystems.
+ Be proficient in data management, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and the documentation of results from independent scientific studies.
+ Demonstrate experience working with various types of coral reef ecological data, including in-water bleaching/mortality data and physical-environmental data, both in situ and remotely sensed.
+ Possess real-world scientific experience working with coral reef ecosystems.
+ Have experience analyzing coral reef benthic data; direct experience using photo quadrat, photomosaic, and/or structure-from-motion technologies is highly desirable.
+ Have field experience with the deployment, maintenance, and replacement of in-water temperature probes.
• Contributing the aforementioned statistically analyzed and interpreted data to peer-reviewed scientific publications; preference will be given to candidates with first-authored peer-reviewed publications that employed statistics to document significant changes in coral reef environments.
Required Education/Experience/Skills:
A Scientist/Marine Biologist with a background in marine science, physical and biological oceanography, and coral reef ecosystem processes is required. A Master's degree or higher with a minimum of 10 years of experience will be highly regarded.
• Extensive real-world experience with coral reef monitoring is essential.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Significant scientific (AAUS) and/or NOAA SCUBA diving experience is mandatory.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
• Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop suite.
• Competence in statistical software (e.g., R statistical environment) is necessary.
Selected candidates will undergo a government background investigation.
GST provides competitive salaries, vacation, sick leave, and holiday leave; comprehensive medical, dental, life, long-term, and short-term disability insurance; a 401K retirement plan; tuition assistance; and opportunities for employee career advancement and development.
All qualified candidates will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, and gender identity. GST is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
