Role Overview:
Northrop Grumman Mission Systems stands as a reliable provider of mission-enabling solutions for global security. Our Engineering and Sciences (E&S) division is dedicated to pushing the limits of innovation, redefining engineering capabilities, and advancing various scientific fields. We are in search of a Principal / Sr Principal Engineering Design (Component Engineering SME) to contribute to our enterprise-wide digital transformation efforts. This role emphasizes the use of Model-based Engineering, DevSecOps, and Agile methodologies to enhance the delivery of critical national defense products and capabilities. The ideal candidate will embody collaboration, transparency, and a team-oriented approach, focusing on empowerment, shared responsibility, flexibility, continuous learning, and fostering a culture of automation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and provide support to technical engineering personnel in the selection and qualification of electronic, electric, and electro-mechanical components/assemblies to ensure compliance with product specifications and reliability standards.
- Manage and analyze Parts Material and Processes (PM&P) to support the next generation of strategic deterrence systems.
- Analyze preliminary plans and execute the Part and Material Management Plan (PMMP) to meet company, customer, and governmental objectives for product longevity.
- Engage in component engineering to establish a sustainable system with qualified parts.
- Collaborate with design engineers to ensure part selections align with design requirements.
- Recommend and assist in identifying sources of supply, including developing alternative suppliers.
- Oversee part management activities in accordance with the PM&P Management Plan.
- Ensure accuracy of part numbers and descriptions in relation to manufacturers' part numbers.
- Maintain and update part data within the product lifecycle management (PLM) system.
- Review and address non-conforming components as necessary.
- Manage approved components for design, ensuring compliance with lifecycle status and qualification requirements.
- Coordinate and manage qualification testing evaluations for non-standard parts.
- Implement fault analysis of components as required.
- Lead initiatives on material processes, including lead-free control plans and hexavalent chromium management strategies.
- Propose design or component selection modifications to enhance system reliability.
- Support counterfeit parts prevention initiatives in accordance with relevant standards.
- Contribute to various engineering review boards and provide insights on component choices.
- Facilitate communication with design teams regarding cost, availability, and technical advantages of component options.
- Offer input on new designs to improve product reliability.
- Develop recommendations for process improvements to streamline part selection and review processes.
- Prepare materials for technical meetings and support program-related discussions.
- Utilize effective communication skills while working with minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications for Principal Engineering Design (Component Engineering SME):
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related STEM discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or 3 years of experience with a Master's degree; or no experience with a PhD.
- Additional 4 years of relevant experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
- Experience in design, reliability, or maintenance within component engineering.
- Familiarity with Agile frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Jira, Confluence).
- Experience in electronic and/or mechanical component analysis and selection.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Must be able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOD Secret Clearance.
Basic Qualifications for Sr Principal Engineering Design (Component Engineering SME):
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related STEM discipline with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or 7 years of experience with a Master's degree; or 4 years with a PhD.
- Additional 4 years of relevant experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
- Experience in design, reliability, or maintenance within component engineering.
- Familiarity with Agile frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Jira, Confluence).
- Experience in electronic and/or mechanical component analysis and selection.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Must be able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOD Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in EEE domains (e.g., programmable logic, RF, power, radiation hardening).
- Experience with SD-19, SD-22, and MIL STD 11991A.
- Familiarity with IHS Part Intelligence, GIDEP, or equivalent tools.
- Knowledge of FRACAS and reliability engineering.
- Experience with DLA ASSIST and/or DLA Qualified Products Database.
- Familiarity with CPLM and Teamcenter PLM.
- Understanding of DFARS requirements for counterfeit components.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is between $97,500 and $146,300, with a potential range of $120,900 to $181,300, depending on various factors including responsibilities, experience, and market conditions. Employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses and a variety of benefits, including health insurance, life and disability insurance, savings plans, and paid time off.
