Job Description

As an Endoscopy Registered Nurse, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Your primary responsibility will be to assess patients' physiologic health status, identifying any potential or actual problems and developing individualized patient goals.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assess Patient's Physiologic Health Status
  • Conduct thorough patient interviews, explaining policies and procedures to patients and their significant others.
  • Review patient charts, answering questions correctly and courteously.
  • Assess gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and neurological health status.
  • Determine mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition, adjusting the plan of care as necessary.
  • Assess level of pain and pain management.
  • Communicate and document patient's physiologic health status and plan of care.
Assess Patient's Psychosocial Health Status
  • Elicit perception of medical/nursing care and the expectation of care.
  • Determine coping mechanism, knowledge level, and ability to comprehend.
  • Identify cultural/ethnic requirements to reduce anxiety and ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Communicate and document psychological status and care plan, including support group, counseling services, and social services.
Identify Patient Outcome
  • Develop criteria for measurement of patient outcomes.
  • Identify actual/potential patient problems.
  • Identify patient's need for teaching based on psychosocial and developmental assessment.
  • Develop patient outcome statement(s) and establish individualized patient goals.
Formulate the Plan of Care
  • Identify care activities and establish priorities necessary to achieve expected outcome.
  • Coordinate the cost-effective use of supplies, equipment, and medication to achieve expected outcome.
  • Document the plan of care and collaborate with physicians and other health team members.
Implement the Plan of Care
  • Maintain constant vigilance over patient care to ensure safety precautions/needs are followed.
  • Exercise professional skills related to the plan of care.
  • Reassess patients as needed and appropriately revise the plan of care.
  • Correctly administer prescribed treatments.
  • Correctly use equipment necessary for patient care.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their significant others.
  • Apply scientific principles in performing procedures, carrying them out safely, timely, and efficiently.
  • Make accurate observations of patient conditions during treatments/procedures, reporting and recording same as appropriate.
  • Keep accurate documentation of patient treatment, activity, and condition, as well as patient responses to medical and nursing interventions.
  • Use appropriate methods of documentation according to departmental policy.
  • Act rapidly and effectively during any emergency situation, managing self, patients, and other employees.
  • Provide a calm, quiet, restful atmosphere, communicating effectively with patients' families or caretakers.
  • Participate in planning for discharge and coordinate referrals as necessary.
  • Provide discharge instructions to patients and their significant others.
Evaluate Care Provided for Patient Outcome
  • Demonstrate ability to measure effectiveness of care provided and document same.
  • Perform variance analysis related to outcome data for performance improvement.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate systems to improve care in the unit.
  • Keep accurate documentation of patient treatment, activity, and condition.
  • Use appropriate methods of documentation according to departmental policy.
Collaborate with Other Care Team Members
  • Collaborate with the appropriate physician on patient's plan of care.
  • Accurately interpret and implement treatment regimen as prescribed by the physician.
  • Assist the physician during treatments and/or diagnostic procedures.
  • Keep the Patient Care Manager/designee and/or physician abreast of changes in patient's condition and/or treatments as necessary.
  • Use clinical judgment in delegating assignments to the Patient Care Associate, Support Care Associate, and Clerical Service Associate in providing patient care, ensuring that assignments are completed in a timely fashion.
Perform Grade I-IV Decubitus Care
  • Perform preventive skin care measures.
  • Apply simple dressings, maintaining principles of aseptic technique.
  • Apply warm and cold compresses, consistent with facility procedure.
  • Perform irrigations, consistent with facility procedure.
  • Perform other procedures related to skin care as necessary.
Administer Medications Correctly and Safely
  • Correctly identify medication: action; dosage; side effects, and implications for the patient.
  • Meet standard on medication administration examination.
  • Demonstrate preparation of local solutions.
  • Demonstrate preparation of I.V. drips.
  • Administer and document medication correctly.
  • Administer IVP medication as per department policy and procedure.
  • Educate patients and their significant others related to drug and food interactions.
Participate in Patient and Family Education
  • Provide patients with an explanation of their condition as indicated.
  • Communicate assessment data in an orderly fashion by recording, updating, and verbalizing pertinent information to care team members and to appropriate agencies.
  • Recognize and utilize health teaching opportunities and resources/materials available for this teaching.
  • Provide for early discharge planning and coordinate referrals as necessary.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching by feedback from patients/family and document same.
Perform Related Duties as RequiredQualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing, required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of professional nursing experience in the related specialty.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required.
  • BLS/ACLS required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
