About the Job

The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center is seeking a skilled Nursing Assistant to join our team. As a Nursing Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the overall success of our healthcare team.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care to patients who require medical and/or psychiatric nursing care under the indirect supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Function as a member of the nursing team in providing quality patient care on any medical/surgical unit.
  • Provide intensive or total nursing care to medically/surgically unstable patients, which requires a high degree of versatility.
  • Perform or assist patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, shaving, daily oral hygiene, and denture care, feeding, skin care, toileting, assisting with dressing, positioning, and transferring.
  • Make rounds at the beginning and end of shift and complete bedside report at the beginning and end of every shift.
  • Obtain vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and pain level.
  • Check patients at a minimum every two hours or more frequently as appropriate and verbally report observations and findings to the registered nurse.
  • Identify environmental safety hazards and notify the charge nurse immediately.
  • Function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff and others in the care of residents.
  • Perform a complete range of procedures, such as routine urinary catheter care, collecting and labeling specimens (urine, stool, sputum) following protocol and labeling accurately, and assisting residents with activities of daily living.
  • Support residents in self-care activities, support family and visitors to assure comfort, peace, and dignity during the dying process, and treat residents, family, self, and others with respect and dignity.
  • Adhere to infection control guidelines in efforts to reduce and prevent infectious disease from spreading.
  • Observe residents' physical and emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience or Education or Training: Six months of general experience, or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation, or completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a NA may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
  • English Language Proficiency: NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Preferred Experience
  • Geriatrics & Extended Care: Long-Term Care and/or acute care experience.
  • Mental Health: At least 2 years of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Experience.
  • Operations: Experience in ER, Med Surg, Tele.
  • Acute Care: Acute Care Experience.
  • Perioperative: Acute Care Experience.

Additional Information

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
