Medical Laboratory Specialist

Job Summary
As a Medical Laboratory Specialist at Emerson Hospital, you will perform a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory tests on environmental, blood and body fluid specimens as prescribed by physicians or healthcare providers in the technical area of Hematology. Your responsibilities will include processing and analyzing all specimens submitted for clinical analysis, reporting results to appropriate personnel, and maintaining instrumentation utilized.
Key Responsibilities
Perform routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory tests on environmental, blood and body fluid specimens
Process and analyze all specimens submitted for clinical analysis
Report results to appropriate personnel
Maintain instrumentation utilized
Requirements
Bachelor degree in Hematology, Biology, Basic Sciences or Medical Laboratory Science
Graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science
Minimum one year of experience in all areas of the Laboratory or Hematology Department
ASCP or NCA certification required, or ASCP or NCA eligible with certification achieved within 6 months of employment
Skills
Ability to take action based on review of policies, protocols, procedures and methodologies
Knowledge of basic laboratory methods and analytical principles in Hematology
Working knowledge of automated and manual laboratory equipment
Manual dexterity sufficient to effect venipuncture and safely handle specimens, calibrate equipment, etc.
Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist
Good knowledge of quality control principles
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Ability to reasonably make appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, outside agencies, vendors and fellow staff members
Computer skills
Ability to read, write and communicate in English
Ability to maintain confidential information
