Public Health Nurse I

Join Suffolk County, NY, in our mission to promote public health and well-being. We are seeking a highly skilled Public Health Nurse I to join our team in the Maternal Health group at our Great River location.
Job Summary:The Public Health Nurse I will perform public health nursing services for individuals and families in home, schools, clinics, institutions, or other assigned areas. The incumbent will assess the health and nursing care needs of patients and families and provide nursing care as needed. Work will be performed in accordance with public health nursing practices, administrative policies, and directives of professional supervisors.
Key Responsibilities:- Instruct patients in proper dietary habits, special exercise, personal hygiene, infant care, disease prevention, and bedside care.
- Conduct disease investigations, including clinical and administrative work.
- Make home visits to residents for public health or other healthcare purposes.
- Participate in community-wide emergency public health preparedness activities and public health responses to emergency events.
- Participate in community public health education and disease control programs.
- Respond to calls from residents and take action to assist them in obtaining appropriate health care.
- Contact outside departments or agencies for assistance in public health programs.
- Visit migrant and summer rehabilitative camps to promote and instruct in public health principles and practices.
- Participate in staff meetings and regional conferences to aid in the professional growth and development of public health programs.
- Perform necessary office procedures for assigned cases, including research, records maintenance, and report preparation and submission.
- Graduation from a NYS or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
- Professional Registered Nurse's License, issued by the NYS Education Department.
- Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS, or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
- Meet federal and New York State employee health requirements, including but not limited to immunizations, for the programs in which they are assigned.
- Full Medical for member and qualifying dependents through Suffolk County Employee Medical Health Plan.
- Tuition reimbursement available for work-related continued education.
- Flexible Spending Account (employee contribution) is available for Dependent Care and Health Expenses.
- 13 Calendar year holidays.
- Vacation Time: 10 days annually, earned at the rate of 2.75 per pay period.
- Sick Time: 13 days annually, earned at the rate of 1/2 day per pay period.
- Personal Leave: 4 days annually, with 7.5 hours on the first day and one additional day every quarter.
- Salary: Step increase every 12 months on July 1 completed year of service, in addition to contractual raises through 2024.
- Membership in the New York State Retirement Pension System, 5-year vested.
