About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Veterinary Director for Animal Welfare to join our team at Takeda Pharmaceuticals. As a key member of our Comparative Medicine team, you will be responsible for providing veterinary medical care to laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being, and contributing to the development of new therapies for patients worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide veterinary medical care to laboratory animals, including clinical care, diagnostic services, and surgical procedures.
  • Develop and implement animal welfare programs to ensure the health and well-being of laboratory animals.
  • Collaborate with research scientists to develop and implement in vivo research models and study designs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including OLAW and AAALAC standards.
  • Develop and lead training programs for staff and scientists on animal welfare and laboratory animal care.
  • Partner with scientists to develop and implement 3Rs principles for animal health, welfare, and compliance.
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and accreditation events to ensure inspection readiness, compliance, and follow-through on findings and suggestions for improvement.
Requirements
  • Doctoral degree (DVM/VMD) from a veterinary school accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC).
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board certification or Board-eligible.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the U.S.
  • 4+ years of experience providing veterinary medical care to laboratory animals in biomedical research, preferably biopharmaceutical R&D and/or at a Contract Research Organization (CRO).
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements, including OLAW and AAALAC standards.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in laboratory animal/comparative medicine and its applications in the conduct of humane animal research and testing.
