The Primary Care Physician (Float) serves as a medical practitioner responsible for the holistic management of patients enrolled in healthcare services provided by the Veterans Health Administration. This role encompasses administrative responsibilities linked to clinic operations and offers leadership and guidance to support personnel within the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT).

Responsibilities
The Primary Care Physician (Float) is tasked with delivering primary care to patients at various Primary Care Clinics. The physician will take on the responsibility for a designated panel of patients as assigned by management. The incumbent may need to travel to different clinic locations to provide clinical coverage in the absence of a provider and may also be required to staff a walk-in, group, or Employee Health clinic during specified hours. The physician is expected to contribute to achieving equality-of-care standards, patient access, efficiency, process improvement, and patient satisfaction within the Primary Care Service through individual patient care and panel/population management.
Key Duties:
- Implement the components and processes related to the VHA Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH) healthcare system design.
- Coordinate care for a panel of outpatients as designated by the Veterans Health Administration.
- Evaluate and treat acute and chronic health issues for both scheduled and unscheduled patients in a clinical environment.
- Conduct comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
- Provide appropriate documentation that includes history, physical exam, findings, diagnosis, definitive care plan, and patient disposition.
- Ensure that patient encounters are properly concluded, including a disposition that clearly outlines the next steps in care.
- Provide each patient with a list of current medications and an appointment schedule at the conclusion of their visit.
- Perform office procedures within their approved privileges.
- Prescribe medications as necessary.
- Order routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests and provide initial interpretations of results.
- Communicate test results to patients effectively.
- Address questions and inquiries from patients, including the use of secure messaging.
- Initiate or expedite requests for consultations and specialty tests.
- Educate patients and their families as required.
- Order immunizations and other preventive or screening services as needed.
- Screen patients to assess the need for hospitalization.
- Perform Basic Life Support as necessary.
- Communicate clinical findings to other providers using the Computerized Patient Record System.
- Act as the managing physician for nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants as assigned.
- Function as a preceptor for residents in the clinic setting as assigned.
- Provide care to patients aged 18 years and older.
- Maintain courteous, tactful, and respectful communication with customers, veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff.
- Utilize data sets from VHA databases to identify and manage patients effectively.
- Comply with the Medical Center Bylaws and the Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel.
- Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Physical Requirements: The work is primarily office-based and in a sedentary setting. The incumbent must be capable of using a computer for electronic clinical charting.
