Job Title: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Sun River Health is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our team at our Monticello site. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you will play a vital role in promoting and supporting breastfeeding women and their families in our community.

Job Summary:

The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will provide peer-to-peer support and guidance to breastfeeding mothers, helping them to overcome challenges and achieve their breastfeeding goals. This is a full-time position that requires a strong commitment to promoting breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding families.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide peer-to-peer support and guidance to breastfeeding mothers
  • Help mothers plan for a return to work or school that supports continued breastfeeding
  • Provide anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of breastfeeding problems
  • Support breastfeeding participants from pregnancy through growth spurts, introducing solid foods, and weaning
  • Provide information on additional sources of help for breastfeeding mothers
  • Actively promote World Breastfeeding Week activities and other events to support breastfeeding
  • Keep accurate records of contacts with mothers using correct forms and documentation
  • Identify signs of normal breastfeeding, including frequency and duration, infant feeding cues, and normal infant weight gain and toileting patterns
  • Be able to demonstrate various positioning techniques for mother and baby, increasing or decreasing breast milk supply, manual expression of milk, and safe and effective collection and storage of breast milk
  • Assist in recruiting candidates for peer counselor training
  • Provide participant-centered support to families individually or in a group setting
  • Maintain all required records and perform appropriate WICSIS documentation of services rendered
  • Provide information on all aspects of lactation within guidelines addressed in training, including information on additional sources of help for breastfeeding mothers
  • Understand how cultural attitudes and practices of the community impact on breastfeeding
  • Promote breastfeeding in the community, workplace, and healthcare system
  • Be a resource for mothers and make connections with other community programs and services
  • Make referrals to the breastfeeding coordinator or other lactation specialist as necessary
  • Follow up on referrals in a timely manner
  • Assist the designated breastfeeding expert or qualified lactation consultant with breast pump assembly demonstrations
Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED required. This is a full-time position with a competitive hourly rate of $20.00 - $21.50 per hour.
